Getting started

Can I store imported stock in UK self-storage?

Yes, self-storage can work for your first imported stock if the operator confirms your goods and planned activities in writing. Check delivery acceptance, courier handovers, access, storage conditions and stock cover before booking or shipping. Factory packing can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the goods against the written terms

Send the operator a stock description covering materials, packaging, quantities and any batteries, liquids, aerosols, food or chemicals. Ask it to identify the permitted-goods and prohibited-goods clauses that apply, including restrictions on damaged returns. Describe batteries built into products separately from loose batteries. Do not treat permission for general business stock as confirmation for your particular goods.

Request the proposed agreement, site rules and relevant schedules before paying. Save their versions and the operator’s written response identifying your site and goods. If that response conflicts with a clause, ask for an agreed written amendment before booking. Our guide to choosing a UK warehouse covers the broader comparison with managed storage and fulfilment.

Ask specifically about picking and packing

Describe opening cartons, picking items, applying dispatch labels, packing orders and handling returns. Ask where each activity is permitted, whether a packing bench is allowed, and how rubbish should be removed. Ask separately about staff, customer visits, electrical equipment and battery charging. Permission to hold stock should not be your evidence that these activities are agreed.

HSE states that employers must protect employees and others from harm. Plan safe lifting, stable stacking and clear routes for your operation. Ask the operator to confirm suitable working space and any site restrictions. If you need regular assembly, testing or prolonged work sessions, describe those explicitly rather than calling them packing.

Agree how incoming deliveries will be accepted

Ask whether staff will accept deliveries when you are absent and whether that service forms part of your agreement. Confirm booking, vehicle access, pallet acceptance, unloading equipment and who moves goods into the unit. Establish where an unattended delivery waits, who can access it, and what happens if it arrives outside the agreed receiving hours.

Agree what the receiver signs for, how visible damage and shortages are recorded, and how you are notified. Ask who bears responsibility while goods wait outside your locked unit. Give the carrier the approved instructions and a refusal contact. Use preparing for a China shipment for the detailed unloading brief, then send the agreed packing requirements to the factory.

Separate access hours from courier collections

Obtain written confirmation of your unit access hours, staffed reception hours and delivery or collection windows. Ask about weekends, bank holidays, booking cut-offs, access changes and unavailable lifts or loading areas. Check whether your planned dispatch schedule fits the hours when somebody can actually hand parcels to the courier.

Ask whether couriers may enter the site or unit, who authorises access, and whether staff will hand over parcels. Agree a collection location, parcel record and proof of handover, plus a process for missed collections. Avoid leaving outgoing orders in a shared area without an agreed arrangement. Trial a delivery and collection before committing the whole shipment.

Check conditions in the actual unit

Give the operator the supplier’s storage instructions and ask whether the proposed unit can meet them. Request written details of any promised temperature or humidity control, monitoring and response to failures. Inspect the actual unit and loading route for damp, condensation, leaks, pests and awkward handling. Ask how incidents are reported and whether you can inspect stock regularly.

Plan shelving, airflow and separation of saleable, returned and suspect stock. Retain carton and batch identification when opening cases. Ask about permitted shelving and floor loading before installation. If the product needs conditions the operator cannot confirm, compare specialist storage before shipment rather than relying on extra wrapping.

Read stock cover alongside the storage agreement

Ask whether the offered protection is an insurance policy or contractual enhanced liability, then request the relevant wording. Check covered goods, valuation method, declared stock value, limits, excesses, exclusions and claim notification requirements. Ask specifically about theft, fire, water damage, damp, mould, pests and accidental handling damage. Obtain confirmation that your declared goods and packing activities fit the cover.

Map protection from incoming unloading through storage to outgoing courier handover, including parcels held outside the unit. Compare the operator’s liability terms with your own policy and ask your insurer to confirm any gaps. Keep invoices, packing lists, stock records and photographs. Our cargo insurance guide helps you ask where shipment cover ends and storage cover begins.
