Getting started

Can I use sale countdown timers on imported stock?

Yes, if the countdown reflects a genuine end to the offer. Do not advertise a deadline while planning to keep the same sale price running. Treat repeated extensions as a warning sign and test what happens when the timer expires. Plan imported stock and promotion dates with Cambridge China Bridge.

Choose a deadline you intend to keep

This guide concerns your business advertising imported stock to UK consumers. ASA guidance says significant conditions, including a closing date, should appear clearly and prominently in the advert. Put the intended end date beside the offer, and specify the time and time zone so customers and your team share the same deadline.

Before publishing, decide which products and variants qualify, what changes at expiry and who checks that the offer stops. Keep the approved wording, promotion settings and screenshots together. Our e-commerce sourcing guide covers the stock and product decisions behind the campaign.

Test what the countdown actually does

The CMA says a countdown is misleading when the sale price continues beyond its advertised end point. A timer reaching its end is not enough: check the product page, basket, checkout and discount code to see whether the advertised offer actually ends.

Refresh the page, return in a fresh browser session and watch the timer expire. Disable settings that restart the deadline for each visitor or automatically repeat the promotion. Ask whoever manages your shop to demonstrate the expiry behaviour before launch, then check it again when the campaign ends.

Do not build repeated extensions into the plan

Unsold imported stock is a reason to review your buying and pricing plan. Treat the advertised closing date as fixed rather than scheduling successive extensions until the warehouse clears. The CMA also identifies a misleading pattern where an offer ends but a comparable follow-on offer removes the supposed need to hurry.

If exceptional disruption makes you consider changing the date, pause the change and seek advice on the circumstances. Record what happened, why a change is proposed and how it would affect customers who acted on the original deadline. Do not assume that announcing an extension resolves the issue.

Separate stock availability from time pressure

For an offer without a closing date, the CAP Code requires the promoter to demonstrate that the absence of a date will not disadvantage consumers. Do not treat removing the date as a shortcut around checking the offer.

If you plan a stock-limited clearance, identify the batch and variants involved and keep the available-stock record current. Check whether incoming cartons, reserved goods or returns will replenish that stock. Plan replenishment separately using our shipping lead-time guide, rather than changing the promotion whenever a shipment arrives.

Keep a promotion file and an expiry owner

Keep the approved advert, qualifying products, stock allocation, price history, deadline settings and screenshots from before and after expiry. Give a named colleague responsibility for checking website banners, scheduled emails, marketplace listings and discount codes against the same plan.

At the China end, ask Cambridge China Bridge's staff to confirm which goods are ready, which remain in production and which await inspection. Use that information to choose stock for the campaign. Before reordering, review the clearance outcome so the next purchase does not depend on another continually extended sale.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a countdown timer for a clearance sale?

Yes, if it reflects a genuine deadline and the offer ends as advertised. Check the price and discount code at expiry, not just whether the timer disappears.

Can I extend a sale because stock has not sold?

Do not plan extensions around unsold stock. Treat the advertised deadline as fixed. Seek advice before changing it, particularly if customers have already acted on the original deadline.

Can my countdown restart when someone refreshes?

Use a shared, fixed campaign deadline. Disable refresh and visitor resets, then test a fresh session and the expiry behaviour before publishing.

Can I launch another sale immediately afterwards?

A new campaign name does not resolve false urgency. The CMA identifies comparable follow-on offers as misleading where they remove the supposed need to hurry.
