Getting started

Buying a drone from China for a UK hobby

Before ordering, identify the exact model, class mark, battery configuration and flying weight. Check the CAA IDs needed and whether the intended site suits its flying category. Keep the model evidence and site checks together. Supplier checks can be arranged through Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the exact aircraft before discussing price

Ask for the manufacturer, exact model designation, hardware version, firmware, battery options and photographs of the aircraft labels. Put these details in the order specification. A marketplace listing that groups several versions together is a poor basis for deciding what you can fly.

Our drone sourcing guide covers import costs, radio equipment and battery checks. This guide adds the purchase decision that comes before those checks: whether the proposed aircraft suits your intended hobby flying site.

Check the class label and supporting documents

Ask the CAA to confirm the UK class-marking requirements applicable to the new model and its proposed market placement date. Ask for a photograph of the mark on the actual aircraft and the declaration and supporting evidence for that configuration. Compare the model designation across the aircraft, manual and documents.

If the supplier offers an unmarked model or European class-labelled stock, record that explicitly and ask the CAA how that exact aircraft would be treated for your planned flying date. Use our test report verification guide to check that supplied reports actually cover the proposed product.

Check weight and registration together

Ask for the manufacturer's maximum take-off weight and weigh the sample with the battery, camera, guards and accessories you intend to fit. Record both figures and the configuration used. Do not base the purchase on an advertised weight that excludes equipment you will use.

Ask the CAA to confirm the Flyer ID and Operator ID requirements for the exact model, taking account of its weight, camera and class mark. Check the exact model against the CAA's current registration guidance before flying.

Check the intended site before choosing the model

Use the CAA's current guidance to identify the exact model's permitted flying subcategory and any additional pilot qualification needed. For a flight in the Far from People subcategory, keep at least 50 metres horizontally from uninvolved people and at least 150 metres horizontally from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas. Measure these distances against your proposed flying area before ordering.

Write down the proposed location and check current airspace information, nearby aerodromes, temporary restrictions and the site manager's conditions. Ask a model flying club whether it accepts the aircraft and what conditions apply at its field. Keep those answers with the model details; do not treat a supplier's demonstration flight as evidence that your chosen UK site is suitable.

Turn the checks into an acceptance brief

Give the supplier a written brief listing the agreed model, class label, documents, battery and fitted configuration. Request photographs and a sample weight record before approving shipment. Use our inspection guide to turn those requirements into checks on the goods supplied.

Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to compare the supplier's sample and shipment with your brief. Keep supplier acceptance and your UK flying-site assessment as separate records, and revisit the assessment whenever you change the aircraft configuration or intended site.

Frequently asked questions

Does a drone under 250 g need CAA registration?

Ask the CAA to confirm whether you need a Flyer ID and an Operator ID for the aircraft's weight and camera configuration. Check the exact model and fitted configuration against current CAA guidance.

What class mark should I ask a Chinese supplier for?

Ask for the actual class mark and supporting documents for the exact model. Ask the CAA to confirm the UK class-marking requirements for the model and its proposed market placement date. Record any unmarked or European class-labelled offer separately.

Can I fly a China-bought model aircraft in a park?

Check the exact aircraft's flying subcategory, the park's conditions and current airspace information before buying. Far from People flying requires at least 150 metres horizontal separation from recreational areas.

What should I check if I choose a different battery?

Ask whether it changes the supported configuration, class documentation or weight. Weigh the aircraft as fitted and reassess the registration and flying-site checks before accepting the substitution.
