Getting started

Can I import a car from China for UK road use?

Yes, provided the exact car can complete the UK approval and registration process. Before paying, check its identity, configuration and approval evidence with a vehicle specialist. Plan customs clearance, NOVA and insurance alongside the purchase. Factory documents can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the exact car, before paying

Own use does not create a blanket exemption, as our own-use imports guide explains. For a permanent import, you must register the vehicle with DVLA. This guide focuses on a car shipped from China to Great Britain. If your destination is Northern Ireland, ask your advisers to assess that destination specifically.

Collect photographs of the chassis identification and manufacturer plate, the exact model and variant, steering position, manufacture date, registration history and available approval documents. Ask for the actual car's records, rather than a brochure for a similarly named UK model. Pause payment if the seller cannot identify the ordered configuration.

Get a written approval assessment

You need proof of vehicle approval to register and tax the car. Before committing, ask a vehicle approval specialist to assess the exact vehicle and check the proposed route with DVSA where necessary. Ask whether existing approval evidence is usable or individual vehicle approval is appropriate, and whether a basic or normal inspection would apply. Normal individual vehicle approval involves a more detailed inspection and documentary evidence.

Request a written list of missing documents, proposed modifications, tests and unresolved questions. Ask the specialist to assess lighting, speedometer display, glazing, restraints and, for an electric car, charging compatibility and repair support. Agree who will obtain evidence and arrange work. Treat an unresolved approval route as a reason to postpone purchase.

Plan clearance and the full purchase budget

Arrange a shipping company or customs agent to make the vehicle's import declaration; GOV.UK requires you to pay one to do this for a shipped vehicle. Use our customs clearance guide for the general border process. Ask the agent to confirm classification, duty and import VAT for the exact car and transaction before booking shipment.

Compare the purchase price with freight, cargo cover, clearance, port handling, storage, inland transport, approval work, registration, vehicle tax and motor insurance. Request separate allowances for modifications and retesting. Keep the vehicle identification consistent across the sale paperwork and shipping records; our customs documents guide covers the general document checks.

Assign NOVA and track confirmation

For a shipped private import, the Notification of Vehicle Arrivals declaration, known as NOVA, must be made within 14 days of bringing the vehicle in. Before shipment, agree who will handle it and ask them to check the HMRC route against your VAT status. Put the arrival date and notification deadline in your import file.

Keep customs release and NOVA confirmation as separate items on your checklist. Ask the appointed handler which customs, purchase and vehicle identity records they need. Track the notification through to HMRC confirmation before preparing the registration submission, and retain that confirmation with the customs entry and payment records.

Prepare registration, transport and insurance

Ask your registration adviser which application and original documents suit the car's new or used status, and whether an MOT is needed. Prepare the file around the actual vehicle, including its approval evidence and registration history. Book transported delivery from the port to storage or the workshop so the plan does not depend on driving the car home immediately.

Motor insurance is required to drive on UK roads. Before paying the seller, ask an insurer whether it will cover the exact import, its steering position, modifications and intended use. Ask whether cover can start against the chassis identification before registration, and how it changes once plates are issued. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help collect factory records for your UK vehicle advisers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a Chinese car just for myself?

Yes, if the exact vehicle can complete the relevant approval and registration process. Own use is not a blanket exemption. Check the car's documents and proposed route before paying.

Does a UK version of the same model prove approval?

Do not rely on the model name alone. Ask a vehicle specialist to compare the exact variant, configuration and approval documents with the car you are buying.

When must I arrange NOVA for a shipped car?

For a shipped private import, arrange the NOVA declaration within 14 days of bringing the vehicle in. Assign responsibility before shipment and track HMRC confirmation separately from customs release.

Can I insure a China import before registration?

Ask the insurer whether it can cover the exact car against its chassis identification before plates are issued. Get its conditions in writing before buying; motor insurance is required for driving on UK roads.
