Getting started

Can I ride a Chinese e-bike on UK roads?

Yes, if the exact bike meets the electrically assisted pedal cycle rules: working pedals, continuous rated motor power no higher than 250 watts and assistance cut-off at 15.5 miles per hour. Check throttle behaviour and any required vehicle approval before paying. Cambridge China Bridge can help collect the factory evidence.

Establish road-use eligibility before ordering

GOV.UK says riders must be 14 or over. A compliant electrically assisted pedal cycle needs no driving licence, registration, vehicle tax or insurance. If the bike fails the classification rules, it is treated as a motorcycle or moped, with motor vehicle requirements.

Ask the supplier to identify the exact model and intended UK configuration. Save the specification and compare it with GOV.UK’s e-bike rules before paying. For Northern Ireland orders, confirm the position with the Department for Infrastructure; the detailed government information sheet used here covers Great Britain.

Specify the motor rating and assistance cut-off

The pedals must be capable of propelling the bike. Maximum continuous rated motor power must not exceed 250 watts, and electrical assistance must cut off at 15.5 miles per hour. These are checks on the delivered bike, so ask for evidence naming its motor, controller and configuration.

Ask the factory to distinguish continuous rated output from advertised peak power. Obtain the motor specification, supporting test report and photographs of the markings. Request a controlled demonstration of assistance cut-off, with speed measured independently of the bike’s display. Record the controller settings and software version used.

Check what the throttle actually does

Ask whether the throttle works from rest, while pedalling and after pedalling stops, and record its maximum powered speed. Great Britain guidance excludes walk assistance that does not exceed 3.7 miles per hour from type approval. A new twist-and-go bike that powers riding without pedalling needs vehicle approval, even if it otherwise meets the pedal cycle limits.

GOV.UK says approval should be completed by the manufacturer or importer before purchase, and an approved bike carries an approval number. Ask for the approval documents and a photograph of that number, then match them to the offered model. Do not accept a generic CE certificate as the answer to a throttle approval question.

Inspect every accessible riding mode

Ask the factory to demonstrate display menus, app controls, switches and any supplied unlock instructions. The Department for Transport’s stated view is that bikes with an off-road mode allowing motor propulsion above the assistance limit do not comply with the electrically assisted pedal cycle rules and are motor vehicles.

Do not base your buying decision only on the default setting or a promise to avoid the faster mode. Put the agreed controller, software, assistance behaviour and absence of an accessible faster mode into the purchase specification. Require fresh review if the factory substitutes components or changes the software.

Make payment depend on a matched evidence file

Before paying, reconcile the quotation, motor documents, controller details, throttle demonstration, marking photographs and any approval evidence. Investigate conflicting ratings or model names. Use our test report verification guide to check the report’s identity and scope, and our quality inspection guide to brief checks on production units.

Keep battery, charger and wider product compliance checks alongside the road-use file. Our electrical imports guide covers that wider work. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can help obtain factory documents and inspect the agreed configuration. Treat unresolved evidence as a reason to hold payment.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Chinese e-bike legal on UK roads?

It can be. Check the exact bike’s pedals, continuous motor rating, assistance cut-off and throttle approval against GOV.UK’s rules before paying.

Does peak motor power decide whether an e-bike is legal?

The classification limit concerns maximum continuous rated power, which must not exceed 250 watts. Ask for documents distinguishing that rating from the advertised peak figure.

Can a throttle e-bike be road legal?

Yes, with the appropriate configuration and approval. Great Britain guidance excludes walk assistance up to 3.7 miles per hour from type approval; new twist-and-go bikes need approval.

Is a CE certificate enough for UK road use?

Do not rely on it alone. Match motor evidence, assistance behaviour and any required vehicle approval to the exact bike. Check battery and charger documents separately.
