Sourcing Wood Pellet Making Machines From China
When sourcing wood pellet machines from China, request a trial on your actual feedstock, verify the supplier and agree acceptance criteria before paying a deposit. Compare flat die and ring die designs against measured output, define the full equipment scope, and confirm destination requirements, payment milestones and landed costs.

Start with your wood, required output and destination
Whether buying a standalone machine or commissioning a production line, start with a written operating specification. Include wood species, source, bark content, contamination, particle size, incoming moisture, finished-pellet requirements, available electricity and installation location.
Ask suppliers to distinguish the pellet press from the complete production line. Identify whether the quotation includes size reduction, screening, metal removal, drying, feeding, cooling, dust extraction, conveyors, controls and packing. Require an equipment list with interfaces and exclusions.
Compare offers against the same material and acceptance criteria. Check whether preparation equipment, electrical work, lifting, commissioning and spare parts are included before comparing prices.
Flat die or ring die: compare the tested application
FAO describes flat die presses as using a perforated disc and ring die presses as using a perforated ring. Its guidance warns that capacities quoted for animal feed should not be assumed to apply to wood. Do not use its historical prices or capacity figures as current purchasing benchmarks.
Do not select a machine solely because a seller calls it industrial, suitable for biomass or suitable for every material. Request evidence for the proposed model, die and wood preparation.
| Option | Basic distinction | Buyer checks |
|---|---|---|
| Flat die pellet mill | Material is pressed through holes in a flat disc. | Request a trial on your wood, measured usable output, the die specification, maintenance access and replacement arrangements. |
| Ring die pellet mill | Material is pressed through holes in a ring-shaped die. | Check the proposed feeding arrangement, die and roller specification, sustained output, cooling requirements and integration with upstream equipment. |
| Complete pellet line | The press operates with material preparation and downstream handling equipment. | Require a line-wide performance commitment and identify bottlenecks, utilities and responsibility for the assembled system. |
Turn capacity and moisture claims into acceptance criteria
Ask what the stated capacity measures: incoming material, hot pellets leaving the die or usable cooled pellets after screening. Specify sustained net output of acceptable pellets, with rejects and recycled fines recorded separately. Request measured output rather than treating motor power as proof of capacity.
Require a written feedstock specification covering wood species or blend, particle-size distribution, moisture range, measurement method and whether moisture is expressed on a wet or dry basis. Record any binder or conditioning used. Ask the supplier to substantiate its moisture recommendation for the proposed material, die and process.
If your material arrives outside the agreed range, establish who supplies the drying or conditioning equipment and how its performance affects the line guarantee. Distinguish incoming wood moisture from finished-pellet moisture.
Send representative material for an agreed trial where practical. Retain identified input and pellet samples and request records showing material preparation, machine identity, settings, measured output, power use, stoppages and pellet quality. Ask the supplier to explain any difference between the demonstration feedstock and your intended material.
Check the factory and proforma before a deposit
Verify the contracting company's legal identity, proposed manufacturing location, role as manufacturer or trader, and ability to build and test the specified equipment. Establish which work is subcontracted. Use factory verification to define the checks and evidence required.
If a quotation proposes a 50% deposit, assess that payment term alongside the supplier checks and contract protections. Do not use the percentage alone to judge legitimacy. Before accepting it, resolve the equipment specification, supplier identity, beneficiary details, delivery obligations, acceptance process and remedies for failure.
Ask for a proforma identifying the contracting parties, model and configuration, included auxiliaries, currency, agreed delivery term and named place, payment milestones, documents, warranty and applicable specification attachments. Independently confirm unexplained changes to bank details.
Use check a machine quote before paying a deposit for the payment decision and how to read a Chinese proforma invoice for the document review. Agree the contract and technical annex together, including the full purchase scope.
Agree FAT before manufacture and inspect before shipment
Agree a factory acceptance test, or FAT, in the contract for the machine you are buying. Define the feedstock, preparation, run conditions, test duration, instruments, sampling, output and pellet-quality criteria before manufacture. Identify who witnesses the test and who signs the report.
Require the report to identify the machine and installed components. Record results, defects, corrective work and any retest. Include competent checks of guards, emergency stops, electrical protection and safe isolation within the agreed scope.
Arrange pre-shipment inspection to check the ordered configuration, accessories, spare parts, identification, documents and packing. Specify operational testing separately, and do not treat a visual inspection as evidence that FAT or conformity-assessment requirements have been met.
Keep factory acceptance separate from installation and site acceptance. Agree responsibility for foundations, utilities, assembly, commissioning, training and performance checks after arrival, including what happens if the machine passes FAT but fails the agreed site test.
A bill of lading copy does not prove machine performance
If the proposed balance trigger is a bill of lading copy, define the required document before paying the deposit. Do not accept a draft as shipment evidence. An issued bill may acknowledge receipt for shipment rather than loading on board. Verify its status, any on-board notation, vessel, ports, container details and release arrangements with the issuing carrier or authorised agent.
A copy does not independently establish sealed-container contents, machine condition, tested capacity or compliance. For example, Maersk's carriage terms distinguish receipt of containers or packages from representations about the goods' contents and quality.
Do not assume that possessing a scanned copy authorises cargo collection. Confirm the applicable original-document, electronic-document or release procedure with the carrier. Link the agreed balance milestone to inspection results, resolved defects, required documents and a workable cargo-release arrangement.
Resolve these conditions before signing. Follow paying the balance on a Chinese machine order for the detailed payment checks.
CIF to Georgia and the Caucasus: quote the port and onward journey
APM Terminals describes Poti as a gateway for trade with Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and documents its rail connections. Batumi International Container Terminal confirms container and general cargo operations. Request route-specific offers via Poti and Batumi, including confirmation of the actual sailing and onward services.
Under CIF Incoterms 2020, the seller pays freight and arranges insurance to the named destination port; cargo risk transfers when the goods are on board at the shipment port. Default insurance is limited cover. The buyer handles import clearance and duties. Check whether destination unloading is already paid under the seller's carriage contract.
For example, a CIF Poti quotation for a machine destined for Yerevan needs a separate onward-delivery and transit plan. Obtain written confirmation of terminal handling, document release, clearance or transit services, storage, container charges, inland transport, border procedures, unloading and installation, identifying what is already included.
For containerised multimodal transport, ask whether CIP matches the agreed handover and journey. Compare quotations on the same scope and confirm insurance coverage through the intended route. Obtain current freight and destination quotations using the actual packed dimensions, weights and handling requirements.

Check machinery and electrical compliance for the destination
For machinery within its scope placed on the EU market before 20 January 2027, the applicable machinery legislation is Directive 2006/42/EC. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 generally applies from 20 January 2027. Plan against the applicable market-placement date.
EN ISO 12100:2010 addresses machinery risk assessment and risk reduction. EN 60204-1:2018 addresses machinery electrical equipment. Check the applicable editions, amendments, scope and harmonised status for the relevant legislation. A standards reference alone does not demonstrate conformity.
Request the applicable machine-specific conformity documents, instructions, identification and supporting technical evidence. Have a competent reviewer assess electrical drawings, protective measures and test records. Specify site voltage, frequency, phases, earthing and available supply capacity, and require confirmation of suitability for that supply.
Assess the whole installation, including material feeding, moving parts, blockage clearing, hot surfaces, noise, wood dust and fire or explosion hazards. Define the safety responsibilities between the press supplier, auxiliary-equipment suppliers and line integrator.
For destinations outside the EU, confirm local product, electrical, workplace and installation requirements before ordering. Do not use CE marking as evidence of approval in another jurisdiction.
UK worked example: customs value and import VAT
Consider a machine imported directly through a British seaport for installation in Cambridge. HMRC's customs valuation guidance includes relevant transport, insurance and associated delivery costs up to the UK port of importation. Check what the supplier's price already includes to avoid double counting.
For import VAT, add applicable import duties and relevant incidental expenses to the customs value, including costs to the first UK destination and transport-related expenses to a further UK destination known at importation. Include only amounts not already counted. If import documents name Cambridge as the destination, it is the first destination for this purpose.
Confirm classification, duty and VAT treatment for the actual equipment and transaction. Describe each machine accurately and ask a customs adviser to confirm the treatment of a standalone press or a shipment containing several machines.
HSE's updated notice states that new machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be UKCA or CE marked, supplied with a declaration of conformity and have instructions in English. Check the requirements for the actual equipment; this marking guidance does not replace a complete compliance assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a flat die or ring die wood pellet machine?
Compare both against your actual wood, required usable output and maintenance arrangements. Choose using a documented material trial and an agreed specification rather than the design name alone.
Can I trust the tonnes-per-hour figure in the listing?
Ask which material and measurement basis it uses. Require sustained acceptable pellet output after cooling and screening, with feedstock conditions and rejects recorded.
What moisture content does my sawdust need?
Get a written range for the proposed material, die and process, including the measurement method and wet or dry basis. Confirm whether drying or conditioning equipment is included.
The supplier wants a 50% deposit. Should I pay?
Do not judge the transaction by the percentage alone. First verify the supplier and beneficiary, review the proforma and technical annex, and agree acceptance, payment and failure remedies.
Is a short running video enough for acceptance?
Do not use a short video alone to accept sustained capacity or pellet quality. Request a FAT using agreed material and measurable criteria, with records identifying your machine.
Can I safely pay the balance against a bill of lading copy?
Assess that trigger alongside inspection evidence and the carrier's release procedure. Verify whether the bill records receipt or loading on board. Do not use it as proof of machine performance or assume a copy authorises collection.
Does CIF Poti or CIF Batumi include delivery to my factory?
CIF covers carriage and insurance to the named port. Obtain a written breakdown for destination charges, clearance or transit, onward transport, unloading and installation.
Does a CE certificate mean I can use the machine anywhere?
Check the destination's requirements and machine-specific conformity evidence. Do not treat a generic certificate or CE logo as proof that the machine and installation meet every applicable requirement.
Can I source just one machine through Cambridge China Bridge?
Ask Cambridge China Bridge to confirm whether it can support your purchase. Provide the specification, destination and any existing quotation, and request a written service scope and price.
