Sourcing wood chipper blades from China

Wood chipper blades from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant woodworking or forestry blade codes, with no trade remedy recorded. Suppliers of workplace articles have safety obligations so far as reasonably practicable. Match each blade to the machine drawing and mounting arrangement. Zero duty on relevant chipper blade lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 8208 covers knives and cutting blades for machines or mechanical appliances. The relevant lines are 8208 20 00 00 for woodworking and 8208 40 00 00 for agricultural, horticultural or forestry machines. The table separates blade applications within these lines; it does not represent separate commodity codes for each blade shape.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for either line. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the classification against the machine's function and the blade description using finding your commodity code. For complete equipment, see the wood chippers guide.

Specify the blade and its mounting

Provide the machine make, model, blade reference and a dimensioned drawing. Specify length, width, thickness, mounting-hole centres, hole and countersink geometry, edge angle, bevel direction and whether the blade is reversible. Include the seating faces and agreed tolerances. A worn sample helps identify the part but should not define the finished edge geometry.

Agree the steel grade, heat treatment, hardness range, surface finish and matched-set weight acceptance. Ask for material certificates and batch-linked hardness results. Include edge protection and installation information in the order. HSE says workplace supply-chain safety obligations include safe-use information and the testing or examination necessary to ensure compliance, so far as reasonably practicable.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative replacement-stock order of woodworking chipper knives under 8208 20 00 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,200, so it is £5,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material and hardness: compare certificates with the ordered steel grade, arrange sample material checks and measure hardness at the agreed positions.

Mounting and geometry: measure thickness, hole centres, countersinks, flatness and bevel direction against the approved drawing and a mounting gauge.

Edges and sets: inspect for cracks, grinding damage, burrs and chips; weigh matched sets against the agreed acceptance criteria.

Arrival and fitting: check protected edges, corrosion, batch identification and installation information. Make the machine safe before maintenance starts, as HSE requires. Record fit and cutting-trial results before accepting the batch.

What goes wrong

Substituted steel and uneven heat treatment can leave blades that dull quickly or chip. Incorrect thickness, bevel direction or countersinks can prevent proper seating even when the bolt pattern appears correct. Differences within a blade set can create vibration. Compare the supplied parts with the drawing and retain inspection results by batch.

Poor packing can damage finished edges before installation. Agree individual edge protection and separation between blades. Ask the factory to correct the cause of a failed batch before replacement production, and use quality inspection explained to agree the inspection scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on wood chipper blades from China?

The relevant woodworking and agricultural, horticultural or forestry blade lines carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Which commodity code covers wood chipper blades?

Check 8208 20 00 00 for woodworking machines and 8208 40 00 00 for agricultural, horticultural or forestry machines. Confirm the machine's function before declaring the blade.

Can a factory copy my existing chipper blade?

Use the sample with a dimensioned drawing and the machine reference. Wear can alter thickness and edge geometry, so approve the finished specification before production.

How do I check replacement chipper blade quality?

Check steel evidence, hardness, mounting dimensions, flatness, edge condition and matched-set weights. Agree a fit check and cutting trial on the intended machine.
