Sourcing wood chippers from China
Wood chippers and relevant parts within heading 8436 carry 0% UK duty from China, with no listed trade remedies. For new machines for Great Britain, confirm machinery safety, conformity marking and declaration requirements with the relevant authority. Check the feed protection and the documents for the actual model. Cambridge China Bridge sources wood chippers.

Zero duty and a waste control to check
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 8436 covers agricultural, horticultural and forestry machinery alongside poultry and beekeeping equipment. Forestry wood chippers are relevant to the forestry machinery line; garden machines and separately shipped components need their own classification. Our wider heading guide covers the other product families.
The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The forestry machinery line attaches waste import and export controls. Waste shipment controls apply when the goods being transported are waste. For a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the attached control and any required documents, particularly for scrap or discarded equipment.
Send the intended use, drive arrangement, cutting mechanism and component drawings to your broker to confirm the commodity code. The garden shredder component line describes a particular motor, gearing and blade assembly, rather than all chipper parts. It also lists a supplementary-unit import measure; ask the broker what quantity information to declare.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forestry machinery, including forestry wood chippers | 8436 80 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Other horticultural machinery, subject to classification | 8436 80 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Garden shredder assembly with single-phase motor, epicyclic gearing and cutter blade | 8436 99 00 10 | 0% | None |
| Other parts of forestry or horticultural machinery | 8436 99 00 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the wood, drive and feed system
Specify the branch material, its condition and the maximum diameter the supplier agrees to demonstrate. Record whether the chipper is manually fed or power-fed, the engine or electric drive, the cutting drum or disc, knife material, replacement knife drawings, discharge arrangement and included spares. Agree a witnessed trial using representative branches.
For Great Britain, CE marking remains recognised for machinery. Confirm the applicable machinery safety requirements, conformity marking route and declaration requirements with the relevant authority. Ask for the exact model's declaration, English instructions and supporting safety documents. Include feed-chute guarding, feed-stop controls and safe access for knife replacement in the specification. For engine-driven models, request a review of engine and noise documentation through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one forestry wood chipper under 8436 80 10 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Feed protection: check chute dimensions against the agreed safety design, secure guards and the operation of feed-stop and reverse controls where fitted. Arrange functional checks by a competent inspector without reaching into the chute.
Cutting assembly: with the machine isolated, check knife identification, fixing bolts, anvil clearance against the manual, bearing play and access for maintenance.
Performance and build: run the agreed branch trial with guards fitted; record stalling, chip discharge, vibration, leaks and loose fasteners. Compare the drive and cutting components with the approved specification.
Documents and arrival: match the nameplate, serial number and declaration to the delivered machine; check instructions, spares and transit damage before commissioning. Use quality inspection to plan the pre-shipment checks.

What goes wrong
A claimed branch capacity can conceal slow feeding, frequent stalling or poor performance on forked material. Knife substitutions, poorly set anvils, loose fixings and obstructed discharge can undermine the agreed trial result. Keep the tested configuration and acceptance criteria in the purchase specification.
A conformity logo on a brochure does not resolve a declaration that identifies a different machine. Feed controls can also be difficult to reach or obstructed by debris. Resolve these discrepancies before shipment. Operators must be adequately trained to use the machine safely.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wood chippers from China?
The selected heading 8436 machinery and parts lines carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The tariff facts were read on 5 November 2026.
Do wood chippers need CE or UKCA marking?
CE marking remains recognised for machinery in Great Britain. Confirm the applicable conformity marking and declaration requirements for new machinery with the relevant authority. Check that the declaration identifies the model and configuration you are buying.
Does the tariff waste control apply to a new wood chipper?
Waste shipment controls apply if the transported goods are waste. The forestry line has a waste control attached, so ask your broker to confirm its treatment and the declaration documents for your shipment.
What should I test before shipping a wood chipper?
Check feed protection and controls, then witness a guarded trial with representative branches. Compare feeding, stalling, discharge and vibration with the agreed specification, and match the documents to the machine.
