Sourcing egg incubators and poultry equipment

Poultry-keeping, beekeeping and feed machinery from China, including egg incubators and brooders, feed mills, poultry drinkers and feeders and honey extractors, pays 0% UK duty with no anti-dumping duty, so import VAT is the only tax. Mains incubators need electrical safety evidence and larger machines machinery marking. Cambridge China Bridge sources this equipment.

Electrical and machinery rules

Mains-powered incubators, brooders and heat lamps are electrical equipment under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, and the product standard for electrical heating appliances for breeding and rearing animals is BS EN 60335-2-71, so ask for a test report to it with a UK plug and voltage. Feed mills, mixers, pellet machines and larger poultry systems are machinery under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and need UKCA or CE marking and guarding.

Electrical equipment brings WEEE obligations, and equipment used with livestock should be easy to clean and disinfect. Hatching eggs, chicks and bees themselves are live animal imports with their own health rules, separate from the equipment.

Worked duty example

An invented example rather than a quote: 200 automatic 1,000-egg incubators, commodity code 8436 21 00 00, bought for £30,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance, so £33,000 is the value customs works from. No duty is due on poultry incubators; import VAT at 20% of £33,000 is £6,600. If you are VAT-registered, that VAT is normally reclaimable. See calculating UK import duty and VAT for the method.

What goes wrong

Incubators fail on control, turning and build. Temperature controllers drift or read wrong so hatch rates collapse, humidity displays are inaccurate, egg turning motors stall or trays jam, fans fail, and alarms do not sound when power or heat is lost. Plastic housings crack and are hard to disinfect, heaters lack thermal cut-outs, and feed mills and pellet machines arrive without guards over belts and rollers.

Run sample incubators empty for at least two days with a calibrated thermometer and hygrometer and log temperature and humidity at several tray positions, check turning over many cycles, test power-fail and over-temperature alarms and cut-outs, carry out earth continuity and insulation tests, and check guarding and emergency stops on feed machinery.
