UK duty on wide-belt wood sanding machines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8465 covers machine tools for working wood, cork, bone, hard rubber, hard plastics and similar hard materials. Its grinding, sanding or polishing line is 8465 93 00 00, the starting point for a wide-belt wood sander.

All listed lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. The table includes related multi-operation and planing lines for comparison, rather than treating every combined machine as a standalone sander.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's functions and configuration, especially where cutting heads and sanding heads share a production machine. For the wider heading and related thicknessing equipment, see woodworking thickness planers.

Specify the sanding heads and finished surface

Specify working width, workpiece thickness range, timber or panel material, stock removal and the required surface finish. Describe the sanding head sequence, contact roller material, platen arrangement, belt dimensions, abrasive grades, feed adjustment and thickness setting. Agree how the supplier will demonstrate the finish using your material.

Confirm the workshop electrical supply, compressed-air needs, extraction connections and the manufacturer's extraction requirements. HSE advises providing extraction at woodworking machines to capture dust before it spreads. Agree belt-changing access, spare conveyor belts, contact rollers, English controls, installation and operator training.

New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be UKCA or CE marked, supplied with a declaration of conformity and have English instructions. Ask for documents matching the delivered configuration, plus electrical diagrams and nameplate details.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative order for one wide-belt wood sanding machine under 8465 93 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Surface and thickness: run your timber and panels through the actual machine before shipment, then repeat agreed checks after installation. Check thickness across the width, scratches, chatter, edge rounding and veneer breakthrough.

Belt and feed: check belt tracking, tension, oscillation, conveyor alignment and feeding at the agreed settings. Look for sideways drift, slipping workpieces and uneven pressure.

Safety and extraction: have a competent inspector test guards, access-door interlocks, emergency stops and feed stopping devices. Check extraction connections against the agreed specification.

Identity and arrival condition: match the machine, declaration, manual and nameplate; inspect conveyor damage, roller condition, corrosion and loose components. Record discrepancies using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A demonstration on easy-to-sand timber can hide poor results on your panels. Uneven roller pressure, a misaligned conveyor or unsuitable platen settings can leave ridges, round edges or sand through veneer. Make acceptance depend on retained samples and agreed measurements, rather than a video of the machine running empty.

Other problems include unavailable belt sizes, substituted contact rollers, controls without English menus and extraction connections that do not match the workshop system. Record the approved configuration and agree who handles installation adjustments and replacement parts before ordering.

New machinery for the Great Britain market needs UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Ask for documents matching the actual machine.

How do I test a wide-belt sander before shipment?

Use your timber and panels. Check thickness across the width, scratch pattern, edge rounding, belt tracking and feed stability against written acceptance criteria.
