Sourcing woodworking panel saws from China

Woodworking panel saws from China carry a flat 2% UK duty under heading 8465, with no listed trade remedy. New saws supplied in Great Britain must meet machinery safety requirements; confirm applicable UKCA or CE marking and declaration of conformity requirements with the relevant authority. Check guarding, braking and cut accuracy. Cambridge China Bridge sources woodworking panel saws.

Panel saw duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 8465 covers machine tools for working wood, cork, bone, hard rubber, hard plastics or similar hard materials. Circular panel saws fall under 8465 91 20 00. The other table entries cover alternative sawing mechanisms and combined machines; they are not interchangeable codes for a standalone circular panel saw.

Every listed line carries 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code against the cutting mechanism and any integrated machining operations. A programmable fence alone does not describe a machining centre. For the wider heading, see woodworking machines.

Specify the panel format and cutting system

Choose a sliding-table, vertical or beam saw around the boards you actually process. Specify usable cutting length, panel thickness, blade and scoring-blade arrangements, blade tilt where needed, fence travel, panel support, hold-downs and extraction connections. State the workshop supply voltage, phase and frequency, and agree who installs and aligns the machine.

Define acceptance using your own veneered, laminated or composite boards. Agree checks for squareness, repeatability, scoring alignment and edge finish. Specify controller language, included blades, adjustment tools and replacement wear parts. Before ordering, ask which machinery conformity route applies, and request the exact machine's declaration of conformity, English instructions and electrical schematic.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of ten sliding-table panel saws; values are not a quotation under 8465 91 20 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,500. Duty at 2% is £410. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,910, so it is £4,182. Import taxes total £4,592; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £410 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cutting accuracy: cut the agreed boards, measure squareness and repeated dimensions, and inspect both faces for chipped edges or scoring marks.

Movement and support: check sliding-table travel, fence locking, panel supports and hold-downs; repeat the cuts after repositioning the fence.

Safety and documents: have a competent inspector check guards, the riving knife where applicable, braking and emergency stops against the machine's design and conformity evidence. Match the declaration, nameplate and English instructions to the machine shipping.

Arrival condition: inspect table surfaces, rails and fence assemblies for rust or transport damage. Check loose accessories and extraction fittings against the packing list, then repeat alignment and acceptance checks after installation. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A saw can cut cleanly during a demonstration yet chip the buyer's laminated boards because the scoring blade is misaligned. Fences can move when locked, sliding tables can lose alignment in transport, and panel supports can sag under the intended sheets. Use representative boards and record the acceptance results for the actual machine.

Generic conformity paperwork, missing guards and wiring for the wrong workshop supply can hold up commissioning. Machinery must be safe before it is placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Settle the conformity evidence, installation responsibilities and correction process before paying the balance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on panel saws from China?

Circular panel saws under 8465 91 20 00 carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Is a CE certificate enough for a Chinese panel saw?

Ask for the declaration of conformity for the exact machine, its UKCA or CE marking, English instructions and conformity route. A generic certificate does not establish that the delivered configuration matches the evidence.

How do I check a panel saw before shipment?

Cut your intended boards and check squareness, repeatability and scoring alignment. Have guarding, braking and emergency stops checked, and match the electrical specification and documents to the actual machine.

Should I buy a sliding-table or beam panel saw?

Compare panel handling, sheet support, cutting patterns, hold-downs and available workshop space. Test your boards on the proposed configuration and agree loading, extraction and installation arrangements.
