Sourcing woodworking machines from China
Woodworking machines from China, including panel saws, bandsaws, planers, spindle moulders, CNC routers, edge banders and sanders, pay 2% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty. Several woodworking machines are high-risk machinery under the 2008 regulations, so conformity evidence matters more than usual. Cambridge China Bridge sources them.
Panel saws, bandsaws, planers, spindle moulders, CNC routers, edge banders and sanders pay 2% UK duty from China. Machinery safety and a worked example.

A flat 2%
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 September 2026, machines of heading 8465 that can carry out different operations without tool change, machining centres, bandsaws, circular saws, planing, milling and moulding machines, grinding and sanding machines, bending and assembling machines, drilling and mortising machines and other woodworking machines carried 2% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure.
Hand-held power tools are in heading 8467; confirm the commodity code.

High-risk machinery
The Annex IV list of high-risk machinery in Schedule 2 to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 includes woodworking machines such as circular saws, hand-fed planing and thicknessing machines, bandsaws and spindle moulders which need a stricter conformity route, either full application of the designated standards or third-party assessment. Ask which route the maker used, and for the technical file, declaration of conformity and UKCA or CE marking.
Buyers who use the machines at work also have duties under the provision and use of work equipment rules, so guards, braking and dust extraction points need to be right on delivery.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: ten sliding table panel saws under 8465 91 20 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,500. Duty at 2% is £410. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,910, so it is £4,182. Import taxes total £4,592; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £410 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
What goes wrong
Woodworking machines fail on guarding, braking and accuracy. Saw blades without a riving knife or brake that stops the blade quickly are unsafe to sell, fences and sliding tables drift out of square, and motors are wired for the wrong voltage or single-phase supply. CNC routers arrive with controllers and software that only have Chinese menus.
Agree a factory acceptance test on your own boards, check squareness and cut quality, the blade brake time, guards and emergency stops, and the electrical specification. Crate machines on skids with the table surfaces protected against rust.
Cambridge China Bridge sources panel saws, bandsaws, CNC routers and edge banders, with the conformity route, electrics and acceptance tests settled before the order. See how our sourcing service works.
