Sourcing grinding machines from China

Machine tools for grinding, sharpening, honing, lapping and polishing metal from China, such as surface, cylindrical, centreless and tool grinders, pay 0% UK duty on all 12 lines with no anti-dumping duty. Wheel guarding and spindle speed limits decide safety, and accuracy is proved on the machine. Cambridge China Bridge sources them.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, machine tools for deburring, sharpening, grinding, honing, lapping, polishing or otherwise finishing metal by grinding stones, abrasives or polishing products, heading 8460, carried 0% on goods from China on all twelve lines, numerically controlled or not, with no anti-dumping measure.

Gear grinding and gear finishing machines are classified under heading 8461, hand-held grinders under 8467, and the wheels themselves under 6804 (see our grinding and cutting wheels guide). Confirm the commodity code from the grinding method and control.

Machinery rules

A grinding machine placed on the UK market must meet the essential health and safety requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with a declaration of conformity, marking and instructions in English. The type standard for stationary grinding machines is BS EN ISO 16089, which covers wheel guards, spindle speed, coolant and dust or mist extraction.

At work, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply to the machine in use, so wheel mounting, guarding and training are the user's duty once it is installed.

Specifying a grinder

Specify table size or grinding length and diameter, wheel size and bore, spindle power and maximum speed, the wheel peripheral speed the guard is rated for, feeds and increments, dressing system, coolant filtration, magnetic chuck or workholding, control and measuring options, and the accuracy and surface finish to be demonstrated on a test part.

Worked duty example

Suppose, purely for illustration, you import 5 CNC surface grinding machines under 8460 12 00 00. At £110,000 free on board and £7,000 to ship and insure, the customs value is £117,000. With 0% duty on surface grinders, the only charge is import VAT: 20% of £117,000, or £23,400. VAT-registered businesses usually recover that in their next return. The method is set out in how UK import duty and VAT work.

Inspection checklist

Accuracy and finish: check spindle run-out, table flatness and travel straightness to the methods of ISO 230-1, and grind the agreed test part and measure size, flatness or roundness and surface roughness against the contract.

Guarding and speed: check the wheel guard, its rated peripheral speed and the spindle speed limit against BS EN ISO 16089, and check the wheel supplied is marked for at least that speed.

Electrics and documents: check the electrical panel against BS EN 60204-1, test every emergency stop, and check the declaration of conformity, English manual and spares list before crating.

What goes wrong

Grinding machines fail on accuracy, vibration and guarding. Spindles or slideways lose accuracy after shipping because the machine was not locked, vibration leaves chatter marks on the finish, the coolant filtration cannot keep up so the finish degrades, and wheel guards or speed limits do not match the wheels the user will fit.

Grind your own test part at the factory, lock and brace the machine for shipping, and repeat the accuracy check after installation. See our quality inspection guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources grinding machines for UK toolrooms, machine shops and resellers, checking the builder's assembly and inspection capability before an order. See factory verification.
