Sourcing weak acid cation resins from China

Weak acid cation exchange resins from China carry 0% UK duty under the other polymer ion-exchanger line, with no listed trade remedies. For public water supply use, confirm the applicable approval route with the water company and relevant authority; spent resin needs a waste-control check. Cambridge China Bridge sources weak acid cation exchange resins.

Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 November 2026, heading 3914 covers polymer-based ion exchangers in primary forms. Weak acid cation exchange resin belongs in the other line, 3914 00 00 90, subject to confirming its composition and supplied form. This is the only relevant line in the supplied tariff data; the separately listed agarose suspension is a different product.

The relevant line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. The tariff attaches waste import and export controls. For spent resin from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements. For imports into England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent and follow its procedures.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition, ionic form and whether the shipment is loose resin or an assembled treatment product. The classification of cartridges and filled vessels differs from that of loose resin. For other products within the heading, see strong-base anion exchange resins.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 November 2026.

Specify the weak acid resin and treatment duty

State weak acid cation exchange resin explicitly. Specify the polymer matrix, gel or macroporous structure, ionic form as shipped, total exchange capacity, water retention and particle size distribution. Ask the factory to identify its capacity test method and reporting basis so you can compare the proposed grade with your existing resin.

Give the supplier your feed-water analysis, including alkalinity, hardness and acidity, together with the required treated-water result and regeneration conditions. Agree a sample trial under those conditions before accepting an equivalent grade. Record rinsing, conditioning, storage and packing instructions in the order specification.

For public water supply in England and Wales, follow the approval route specified by the water company. For food or drinks processing, obtain the food-contact declaration and migration or leachables evidence described in the site's existing resin guide. Match those documents to the actual grade and intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 bags of weak acid cation exchange resin, each containing 25 litres under 3914 00 00 90, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,500, so it is £700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check the grade, weak acid cation type, supplied ionic form and batch details against the order and certificate of analysis.

Capacity: sample several packs and compare exchange capacity and water retention using the agreed test method and reporting basis.

Beads: check the wet particle size distribution and inspect for cracked beads, fragments and fines; compare with the approved sample.

Condition: check seals, moisture retention and storage records, then rinse a sample and inspect the rinse water for colour and odour. Use the quality inspection guide to organise the checks.

What goes wrong

An equivalent grade can disappoint when its ionic form or capacity reporting basis differs from the approved resin. Datasheet capacity alone does not demonstrate performance in your treatment process. Resolve differences through the agreed sample trial and batch testing before accepting a substitution.

Dried or cracked beads, excess fines and persistent colour or odour can make an otherwise matching shipment unsuitable. Agree acceptance criteria and retain samples. Food-contact paperwork or public-water approval for another grade does not establish suitability for the resin being supplied.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on weak acid cation resin from China?

The supplied tariff data records 0% for 3914 00 00 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension.

Can I replace my existing resin with a Chinese equivalent?

Compare ionic form, matrix, capacity test basis, water retention and bead distribution. Trial the proposed grade with your feed water and regeneration conditions before accepting it.

What paperwork should I request for food-processing resin?

Ask for a food-contact declaration and migration or leachables evidence matching the supplied grade and intended process, as described in the site's existing resin guide.

Can I import spent weak acid cation resin from China?

Ask your customs broker to confirm the waste controls. For notified waste imports into England, the exporter applies to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent and follows its procedures.
