Sourcing vehicle tail lifts from China
Vehicle tail lifts have 0% ordinary UK duty from China under the proposed other-machinery line. Check the boom-lift measure's product scope rather than applying its rate to every tail lift. Machinery supplied in Great Britain needs conformity documents, marking and English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources vehicle tail lifts.

UK duty and the boom-lift scope check
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8428 covers lifting, handling, loading and unloading machinery. The proposed line for these vehicle tail lifts is 8428 90 90 80, other machinery. The table shows different tail-lift designs against that same candidate line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. For the reverse trade route, see exporting lifting equipment to China.
Ordinary duty from China is 0%. The supplied tariff record also attaches provisional anti-dumping duty of 71.74% and registration using additional code 8C10 to goods concerned on this line, with no suspension recorded. The official duty notice covers specified boom lifts and excludes goods outside its description. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether your tail lift falls outside that scope and which declaration codes apply.
Confirm the commodity code using the operating description, installation drawings and whether the shipment is a complete lift or separate components. For related loading equipment, see dock levellers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantilever vehicle tail lifts, classification to confirm | 8428 90 90 80 | 0% | 71.74% residual anti-dumping (provisional) |
Specify the tail lift around the vehicle
Give the factory the chassis model, mounting dimensions, rear overhang, body floor height and available stowage space. Specify the platform dimensions, material, rated load at the agreed load centre, pallet-truck use, power supply, hydraulic power pack, controls, roll stops and transport locking arrangement. Require drawings showing clearance when deployed and stowed.
For supply in Great Britain, confirm the applicable safety requirements, technical-file arrangements, conformity assessment, declaration of conformity, accepted marking and English instructions with the relevant product safety authority. Ask for documents matching the actual lift and mounting configuration. Agree who fits and commissions it, and identify replacement seals, hoses, pins and control parts before ordering.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: One vehicle tail lift with mounting kit; illustrative only, subject to classification and trade-remedy scope checks under 8428 90 90 80, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: compare mounting brackets, platform dimensions, stowed envelope and supplied fasteners with the approved vehicle drawings.
Operation: have a qualified technician check raising, lowering, platform tilt, load holding, controls and transport locks against the agreed acceptance procedure.
Hydraulics and structure: inspect cylinders and connections for leaks, hose routing for rubbing, welds for visible defects, and pins and bushes for play.
Documents and arrival: match the nameplate and declaration to the lift, check the English manual and mounting kit, and record transit damage before installation. Arrange quality inspection before shipment as well.

What goes wrong
A tail lift can match the advertised capacity yet fail the installation brief because its load centre, mounting geometry or stowed position differs. Watch for platform drift, leaking connections, exposed hoses, loose pivots and locks that do not engage reliably. Document each discrepancy against the agreed drawings and acceptance procedure.
Vehicle tail lifts used at work fall within lifting-equipment duties. Agree the examination arrangements with the competent person before putting the lift into service. A factory demonstration and a conformity declaration should not be treated as the whole workplace acceptance process.
