Sourcing vaccine fridges from China
The selected vaccine-fridge candidate lines under heading 8418 carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Refrigerant controls and electrical safety requirements still apply; specify and test temperature performance for the intended vaccines. Cambridge China Bridge sources vaccine fridges.

Duty and classification for vaccine fridges
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions listed. Heading 8418 covers refrigerators and other refrigerating equipment. The table gives candidate classifications for vaccine-storage cabinets and other refrigeration designs, rather than a single code covering every vaccine fridge.
The tariff attaches restrictions concerning ozone-depleting substances and, on the relevant lines, fluorinated greenhouse gases. For equipment from China pre-charged with HFCs, check quota authorisations, the applicable declaration of conformity and labelling before shipment. Equipment placed on the Great Britain market must comply with applicable product bans. The tariff also attaches an ozone-depleting-substance control; confirm its declaration requirement with your customs broker.
Confirm the commodity code using the cabinet construction, function and refrigerant configuration. Do not classify a specialist vaccine fridge solely from its sales name or a supplier's suggested code. For the wider heading, see commercial fridges and display freezers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other refrigerating storage furniture, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 50 90 10 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigerating storage furniture, other refrigerant configurations | 8418 50 90 90 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigerating equipment, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 69 00 91 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigerating equipment, other refrigerant configurations | 8418 69 00 99 | 0% | None |
Specify vaccine storage performance
Official vaccine guidance describes maintaining the cold chain as keeping vaccines within +2°C and +8°C. Agree the intended vaccines and their storage conditions with the buyer's clinical team. Specify usable capacity with boxed stock, permitted loading positions, ambient operating conditions, door-opening recovery, temperature logging and alarm behaviour.
Ask for temperature mapping with independent probes across the loaded cabinet, including positions near the door and cooling surfaces. Specify adjustable shelves, a lock, an accessible probe port, replaceable seals and available controller spares. Agree how high-temperature, low-temperature, door-open and power-loss alarms will be demonstrated.
For mains-powered fridges, confirm the applicable electrical conformity documents and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the relevant authority, using the published refrigeration guide as a starting point. Importer instructions must be in easily understandable English. Match the declaration and supporting test reports to the exact model, controller and refrigerant supplied.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 vaccine fridges, subject to confirmation of classification under 8418 50 90 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,000, so it is £1,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Temperature: compare the displayed reading with independent probes and review loaded mapping and recovery records before accepting the unit for vaccine storage.
Alarms: trigger the agreed alarm conditions and check audible warnings, remote outputs, logging and behaviour after power returns.
Cabinet: check door alignment, seals, locks, shelf retention, drainage and packaging damage on arrival.
Documents: match the serial number, model, refrigerant and electrical rating to the nameplate, declaration and test reports. Plan the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A satisfactory controller reading can hide cold spots near cooling surfaces or warm areas behind tightly packed boxes. An empty-cabinet demonstration can also miss poor recovery after routine door openings. Make loaded mapping and the agreed loading layout part of acceptance.
Controller substitutions, poorly positioned probes, damaged door seals and alarms that stop working during a power failure can undermine the agreed specification. Require approval for component changes and repeat the agreed arrival checks before putting vaccines into the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on vaccine fridges from China?
The selected candidate lines under heading 8418 carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. Confirm the exact classification.
What temperature should I specify for a vaccine fridge?
Official guidance describes the vaccine cold chain as +2°C to +8°C. Confirm the intended vaccines' storage conditions with the clinical buyer and test the loaded cabinet against the agreed specification.
Do vaccine fridges need F-gas import paperwork?
For HFC-precharged equipment, check quota authorisations, the applicable declaration of conformity and labelling. Give your customs broker the refrigerant and charge before shipment.
Is a temperature display enough to accept a vaccine fridge?
Specify independent loaded temperature mapping, door-opening recovery and alarm demonstrations. Check these again after transport, alongside seals, probe positions and the supplied documents.
