Sourcing ultra-low temperature freezers from China
Ultra-low temperature freezers from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected heading 8418 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Refrigerant controls still apply: check the exact gas, charge and applicable product bans before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources ultra-low temperature freezers.

Freezer codes and 0% duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected freezer lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. Heading 8418 covers refrigerating and freezing equipment. These rows are possible classifications for ultra-low temperature cabinets, subject to their construction, capacity and refrigerant.
The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances, and fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to the HFC-charged rows. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances. For HFC-charged refrigeration imports, confirm any applicable quota conformity declaration requirements with your customs broker or the relevant authority. Imported F-gas equipment must be labelled. Give the gas and charge details to your customs broker and confirm the declaration requirements.
Confirm the commodity code using the cabinet type, capacity and charging details, rather than the advertised storage temperature alone. For the wider heading, see commercial fridges and display freezers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upright freezers up to 250 litres, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 40 20 91 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers up to 250 litres, other refrigerants or uncharged | 8418 40 20 99 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers over 250 litres up to 900 litres, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 40 80 91 | 0% | None |
| Upright freezers over 250 litres up to 900 litres, other or uncharged | 8418 40 80 99 | 0% | None |
| Chest freezers over 400 litres up to 800 litres, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 30 80 91 | 0% | None |
| Chest freezers over 400 litres up to 800 litres, other or uncharged | 8418 30 80 99 | 0% | None |
Specify the storage duty and refrigeration system
Specify the intended contents, working temperature, allowable temperature variation, room conditions and usable rack capacity. Agree a temperature-mapping test with independent calibrated probes, a representative load and recorded door openings. Define acceptable pull-down and recovery performance in the purchase specification rather than accepting an empty-cabinet display reading.
Ask for each refrigerant and its charge, including separate circuits in a cascade system. Equipment containing banned F gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market. Have the supplier document the intended use and have the applicable product ban checked for that model; a laboratory cabinet should not be assessed solely from a display-freezer description.
For mains-powered freezers, confirm the applicable electrical conformity documentation and CE or UKCA marking requirements with the relevant authority, using the site's refrigeration reference as a starting point. The importer must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English. Request model-matched reports, wiring diagrams, alarm instructions, maintenance information and a spare-parts list.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Pilot batch of upright ultra-low temperature freezers without HFCs, illustrative only under 8418 40 80 99, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Temperature: map the loaded chamber before shipment and repeat the agreed acceptance test on arrival, comparing independent probe readings with the controller.
Alarms: test high-temperature, open-door and power-failure warnings, remote alarm contacts and the agreed backup behaviour.
Cabinet: inspect inner doors, gaskets, hinges, latches, insulation joints and access ports for damage, gaps and frost paths.
Identity and handling: match serial numbers, refrigerant labels and documents; inspect transport damage and follow the manufacturer's settling and start-up instructions. Agree the scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
An empty cabinet can reach its advertised temperature while loaded racks contain warmer areas. A controller offset, obstructed airflow or leaking inner-door seal can hide the problem. Agree the mapping method and acceptance criteria before payment, and keep the temperature traces with the inspection record.
Substituted compressors, controllers or refrigerants can invalidate the evidence supplied for the sample. Missing remote alarm connections and unavailable replacement gaskets also make a freezer harder to support. Freeze the approved component list and require approval before substitutions; check the shipped units against it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on ultra-low temperature freezers from China?
The selected heading 8418 freezer lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff record. Confirm the code from cabinet type, capacity and refrigerant.
Are ultra-low temperature freezers automatically banned because they use HFCs?
Do not assume a blanket ban. Check the specific product category, intended use and refrigerant against the applicable bans. HFC import controls and labelling still need checking.
Does the virgin F-gas refill ban cover ultra-low temperature equipment?
The official refill guidance excludes equipment designed to cool products below –50°C. That servicing exception does not establish that an imported model meets every product or import requirement.
How do I check that a freezer protects stored samples?
Agree loaded temperature mapping with independent calibrated probes, then test recovery after door openings and alarm behaviour. Repeat acceptance checks on arrival before placing valuable samples inside.
