Sourcing 12V compressor fridges from China
The selected 12V compressor fridge lines carry 0% UK duty from China. The main rule is to check the refrigerant and applicable import controls before ordering; low voltage does not remove electromagnetic compatibility obligations. Cambridge China Bridge sources 12V compressor fridges.

Zero duty, with refrigerant-dependent codes
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected household compression fridge lines under heading 8418 carried 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. These are possible classifications for this product family, rather than a single code covering every portable or vehicle fridge.
The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting substance restriction to the selected lines and fluorinated greenhouse gas controls to the HFC-pre-charged lines. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances. Confirm applicable HFC labelling, quota authorisation and conformity paperwork requirements with the Environment Agency or your customs broker, including whether an annual import threshold applies. Give the broker the refrigerant identity and charge, and confirm the declaration requirements before shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using the intended use, cabinet configuration, capacity and refrigerant. A freezer compartment or separate external doors can change the classification. For the wider heading, see commercial fridges and display freezers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify the fridge and its power system
Specify a compressor fridge, its usable capacity, compartment arrangement and intended installation. Agree cooling performance at the intended ambient conditions, energy consumption under a defined test method, ventilation clearances and the permitted operating inclination. Identify the compressor, controller, refrigerant and charge. Require approval before component substitutions.
Specify the supply range, starting current, cable length, conductor size, connector polarity, fuse arrangement and battery protection settings. For built-in models, agree the mounting points, travel latch and access for servicing. Treat any supplied mains adaptor as a separate item in the documentation and sample assessment.
A 12V-only fridge sits below the direct-current voltage range of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, but equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance falls within the electromagnetic compatibility regime, subject to its exceptions. Ask for model-matched conformity documents and test evidence. Assess any mains adaptor separately, and confirm energy-labelling scope for the actual power configuration and intended use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 built-in compressor fridges under 8418 21 59 90, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Cooling: run sample units with the agreed load and ambient conditions; record pull-down, temperature stability, recovery after opening and energy consumption. For vaccine storage, see our guide to sourcing vaccine fridges.
Power: test compressor starting, voltage drop through the supplied cable, connector heating, battery protection and restart behaviour using the intended supply.
Cabinet: check seals, hinges, latches, handles, mounting points, ventilation openings and insulation defects; repeat functional checks after the agreed transport test.
Identity: match the model, refrigerant, charge, controller and adaptor to the approved sample and documents. Repeat sample running checks on arrival. Use the inspection guide to plan checks before shipment.

What goes wrong
A fridge can pass a bench test yet repeatedly stop in a vehicle because its cable and connector cause voltage drop when the compressor starts. A display reading also does not prove that the contents reach the agreed temperature. Test with the supplied cable and measure temperatures inside the loaded compartment.
Poor ventilation, distorted seals, weak travel latches and damaged refrigerant tubing are useful failure points to investigate. Freeze the approved configuration and record defects against it. Do not accept a different refrigerant or controller without reassessing the documents, customs classification and performance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on 12V compressor fridges from China?
The selected household compression fridge lines under heading 8418 carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff snapshot.
Does a 12V fridge need electrical compliance documents?
Low voltage does not remove electromagnetic compatibility obligations. Ask for documents covering the exact fridge and assess any supplied mains adaptor separately.
Can I import an HFC-charged compressor fridge?
Check the applicable product bans, labelling and annual quota requirements before ordering. Give your customs broker the intended use, refrigerant and charge; an HFC tariff code does not itself establish permission.
Why does the fridge stop when the compressor starts?
Investigate voltage drop through the cable and connector, the supply capacity and battery protection settings. Reproduce the fault with the supplied cable and intended power source.
