Sourcing unworked mussel shells from China
Unworked mussel shells from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. Intended use and attached flesh determine which line to check; food-use shells and shells containing tissue carry veterinary control. Confirm the import route before shipping. Cambridge China Bridge sources unworked mussel shells.

Zero duty, with controls depending on use
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0508 covers mollusc shells that are unworked or simply prepared but not cut to shape, plus powder and waste. This guide concerns mussel shells. Food-use empty shells, shells containing tissue and other shells have separate lines. The decorative rows show different purchase specifications under the same code. For the wider heading, see our unworked clam shells guide.
The relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. The tariff attaches veterinary control to food-use shells and shells containing tissue. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the actual consignment, including whether a common health entry document is needed. Where the animal-by-product import route applies, consignments must enter through an approved border control post; confirm admissibility before ordering.
The tariff also attaches organic-product import control to these lines, CITES import control to the other-shells line, and CITES export control to the relevant shell lines. For CITES-listed species, confirm import and export documents before ordering. Ask your broker whether the organic control applies; if an organic certificate of inspection is required, the exporter's control body issues it. Confirm species, cleaning, remaining tissue and intended use when finding your commodity code.

Specify mussel species, cleaning and shell grade
Specify the mussel species, source, intended use and whether you want loose shell halves or matching pairs. Agree shell length, width, curvature, colour variation and acceptable edge damage against a retained sample. State whether natural outer surfaces should remain and describe washing, drying and any chemical treatment.
For decorative stock, agree how much attached material, sand and foreign matter you will accept. For food-serving shells, ask a laboratory to assess the proposed cleaning process and suitability for the intended food, temperature and reuse. Do not accept a decorative sample as evidence of suitability for serving food.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of cleaned unworked mussel shells for decorative use under 0508 00 90 90, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,400, so it is £480. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare species, shell shape, colour and supplier batch records with the agreed sample; investigate mixed shell types.
Cleanliness: inspect inner surfaces, hinge areas and shell edges for flesh, soft tissue, sand, salt deposits and cleaning residues; check for odour and damp.
Grade: sample across cartons for dimensions, curvature, matching pairs, cracks, chipped rims and excessive fragments.
Packing: check that shells cannot rub or crush each other during handling; compare carton contents and batch marks with the packing list.

What goes wrong
A clean-looking top layer can conceal damp shells or attached flesh deeper in the carton. Hold affected stock separately and ask the broker whether the condition changes the declared line or import requirements. Repeated washing can also leave residues, while rough handling turns usable halves into chipped shells and fragments.
An attractive sample may be hand-selected while the shipment contains mixed sizes, thin shells and unmatched halves. Agree the grading method and packing trial before production, then compare shipment samples with the retained sample. Food-use orders need a separate suitability assessment rather than a supplier's general assurance.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
