Zero duty, with controls depending on the shell

Heading 0508 covers mollusc shells that are unworked or simply prepared but not cut to shape, alongside coral, other shells, cuttle-bone, powder and waste. This guide concerns unworked clam shells. Food use, glucosamine manufacture and attached tissue have separate tariff descriptions. The table repeats the food/glucosamine code to distinguish buying uses. See the wider shells and coral guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. The tariff attaches veterinary control to food/glucosamine shells and shells containing tissue. Ask your customs broker to confirm admissibility from China and the required veterinary documents for the actual consignment.

The tariff attaches CITES import control to the other-shells line, CITES export controls to all shell lines, and organic import controls to all shell lines. Confirm species-specific documents before ordering. For any organic claim, ask your broker to confirm whether the control applies and what evidence is required. Confirm the commodity code against species, preparation, remaining flesh and intended use.

Specify species, shell condition and intended use

Name the clam species, preferably with its scientific name, and record the harvesting origin. Specify empty shells, whole shells or separate valves, matched pairs where needed, size grading, natural colour and acceptable edge damage. Agree whether washing is allowed and exclude drilling, cutting, coating or polishing unless separately specified. Retain a sample showing the agreed condition.

For species listed in CITES Annex A, B or C, obtain the applicable permit. Confirm import and export documents with the relevant authorities. Do not accept a supplier's general description of mixed shells as species identification.

For food-serving use, describe the food, contact conditions and cleaning method to your testing provider. Ask for a suitability assessment of the actual shells and any cleaning residues. Agree protective packing that prevents shells rubbing together and keeps them dry.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of clean, unworked clam shells for craft use under 0508 00 90 90, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,400, so it is £480. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare species records, origin and intended use with the order, sample and shipment documents; investigate mixed or substituted shells.

Cleanliness: inspect hinges and inner surfaces for flesh, membrane, sand, odour, damp and cleaning residues.

Grading: compare shell dimensions, colour, valve matching, cracks and chipped edges with the agreed sample.

Packing: check cushioning, movement inside cartons, crushed corners and batch identification; use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A sample of clean shells can be followed by a bulk lot with membrane or flesh left around the hinge. Mixed species, uneven grading and unmatched valves can make the shipment unsuitable for the planned use. Set aside affected stock, photograph the defects and have the broker reassess the declaration if the goods differ from its description.

Loose shells rub and chip during transport; damp packing can conceal odour until cartons are opened. Inspect across the shipment on arrival. A craft sample does not establish suitability for serving food, so keep the intended use consistent from specification through testing and delivery.
