Sourcing unheated air curtains from China
Unheated air curtains from China carry 2% UK duty on the selected fan lines, with no recorded trade remedy. Commercial units within machinery safety rules need conformity assessment, a declaration and the relevant marking before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources unheated air curtains.

Duty and classification for unheated air curtains
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected fan lines under heading 8414 carried 2% duty for goods from China. Their records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. Unheated air curtains create an air stream across a doorway without a heating element or hot-water coil.
The axial-fan line records a restricted suspension for small fans used to manufacture specified audiovisual products. Do not budget on that relief for doorway air curtains. The table includes possible fan and component lines, rather than confirmed classifications for every air curtain. The feedback centrifugal-fan line applies only where all its detailed specifications are met.
Give your customs broker the complete assembly drawing, fan type, motor output and intended mounting position to confirm the commodity code. A supplier's description of an ambient or unheated model does not settle its classification. See the wider fans and cooker hoods guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall or ceiling fans with self-contained motor output not exceeding 125 W | 8414 51 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Other axial fans | 8414 59 25 90 | 2% | None |
| Other centrifugal fans | 8414 59 35 90 | 2% | None |
| Specification-limited feedback centrifugal fans, potentially bought as components | 8414 59 35 50 | 2% | None |
Specify the doorway and the air stream
Specify doorway width, mounting height, available fixing space, discharge direction and the operating conditions at the entrance. Ask for airflow and air velocity at the intended mounting height, with the test conditions stated. Agree casing dimensions, motor and bearing details, supply requirements, speed settings, noise measurement conditions, door-switch operation and access for cleaning.
For commercial assemblies within machinery safety rules, require conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and the relevant marking before sale in Great Britain. Ask for the exact model's declaration, supporting technical evidence and installation instructions. Check whether the fan falls within the ecodesign scope described in the reference guide; tariff motor output alone does not settle that question. Arrange testing and certification checks before approving production.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 unheated air curtains, subject to classification confirmation under 8414 59 35 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 2% is £138. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,038, so it is £1,407.60. Import taxes total £1,545.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £138 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Air stream: run the shipping units at each agreed setting and check coverage across the outlet, discharge direction and performance against the agreed test method.
Controls: check the door switch, remote control, speed selection and restart behaviour; compare wiring and motor details with the approved sample.
Assembly: inspect impeller clearance, vibration, guards, bracket fit, fixing access and casing damage; repeat the checks when unpacking on arrival.
Documents and labels: match the model to its declaration and instructions. Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Use the inspection guide to organise the checks.

What goes wrong
A strong air stream beside the outlet can still leave the doorway poorly covered at the intended mounting height. An oversized casing can obstruct installation, while a distorted impeller or loose bracket can cause vibration. Reject unsupported energy-saving claims and agree performance acceptance against the actual doorway conditions.
A mark on the casing cannot replace matching conformity evidence. Importing electrical equipment commercially into the UK can make your business an electrical-equipment producer, with annual registration obligations. Check the route before selling, and agree replacement motors, impellers and controllers before ordering.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on unheated air curtains from China?
The selected fan lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the complete unit's classification before ordering.
Does an unheated air curtain need conformity documents?
Match the documents to the actual model.
What airflow should I ask the factory to prove?
Ask for airflow and air velocity at your intended mounting height, with the measurement conditions stated. Check coverage across the doorway rather than relying on outlet velocity alone.
Can I use the same air curtain for every doorway?
Choose against doorway width, mounting height, exposure, fixing space and control needs. Approve a sample under the intended operating conditions before placing the production order.
