Sourcing electric fans and cooker hoods from China
Desk, pedestal, wall and extractor fans and cooker hoods from China pay 2% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty. Which ecodesign rules apply depends on the product: the fan regulation starts at 125 W, so household fans fall outside it, while cooker hoods have their own efficiency, lighting and labelling rules. Cambridge China Bridge sources own-brand fans and cooker hoods to a tested specification.

One rate, several codes
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 September 2026, table, floor, wall, window, ceiling and roof fans with a motor of up to 125 W carried 2% duty on goods from China, as did axial and centrifugal fans and cooker hoods with a longest side of up to 120 cm. No line carried an anti-dumping measure.
The 125 W line in the tariff also marks the boundary of the fan ecodesign regulation, so the motor output on the specification settles both the code and the rules. Confirm the commodity code for each model.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans, motor up to 125 W | 8414 51 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Other axial fans | 8414 59 25 90 | 2% | None |
| Other centrifugal fans | 8414 59 35 90 | 2% | None |
| Hoods with a longest horizontal side up to 120 cm | 8414 60 00 00 | 2% | None |
Which ecodesign rules apply
Great Britain retained the EU fan regulation, Regulation 327/2011. Article 1 applies it to fans driven by motors with an electric input power between 125 W and 500 kW, and excludes, among others, fans in kitchen hoods where the fan power is under 280 W. A desk or pedestal fan is below that range, so its compliance rests on electrical safety and a clear specification rather than ecodesign; a larger commercial fan may be in scope.
Domestic electric cooker hoods have their own regulation, 66/2014. Its Annex I sets an energy efficiency index that tightened in three tiers to below 100, requires a hood with a maximum air flow above 650 m3/h to fall back automatically to 650 m3/h or less, and requires the lighting to give more than 40 lux on the cooking surface. Hoods also carry an energy label under Regulation 65/2014, so ask the factory for the test data behind the label as well as the label itself.
What goes wrong in production
The motor is where fans are cheapened: copper windings replaced with aluminium, smaller bearings, a thinner guard. Name the winding material and the bearing type in the specification, and ask for a run test at inspection. Noise and oscillation are the complaints customers notice first, so agree a noise measurement and check the oscillation gearbox on a sample from every batch.
For cooker hoods, check the air flow and noise against the figures on the label, the fit of the filters, and the finish of stainless steel panels, which scratch in transit unless each panel is filmed and cornered.
Seasonal buying
Household fans sell in a few summer weeks, so the order date matters more than the price. Plan production to land before the season, with time for inspection and a margin for delay; the production delay guide covers what to do if the date slips.
Cambridge China Bridge sources own-brand fans and cooker hoods to a written specification, checks the ecodesign and label data where they apply, and times production so the goods arrive before the season. See how our sourcing service works.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electric fans from China?
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 September 2026, table, floor, wall and ceiling fans with a motor of up to 125 W carried 2% duty from China, as did cooker hoods up to 120 cm, with no anti-dumping duty.
Do desk fans have to meet ecodesign rules?
Not the fan regulation. Regulation 327/2011 applies to fans with an electric input power between 125 W and 500 kW, which is above a household desk or pedestal fan.
What ecodesign rules apply to cooker hoods?
Regulation 66/2014 sets an energy efficiency index below 100 in its final tier, an automatic fall-back to 650 m3/h for powerful hoods and lighting above 40 lux, and Regulation 65/2014 requires an energy label.
How are fans cheapened in production?
Usually in the motor: aluminium instead of copper windings, smaller bearings and thinner guards. Name the materials in the specification and run-test samples at inspection.
