Sourcing olive oil storage tanks from China

Unequipped stainless steel olive oil storage tanks over 300 litres from China carry 0% UK duty across the applicable liquid-container lines. Food-contact surfaces must not release substances that harm health or unacceptably change the oil's composition, taste or smell. Cambridge China Bridge sources unequipped stainless steel olive oil storage tanks.

Zero duty on unequipped olive oil tanks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7309 covers steel containers exceeding 300 litres without mechanical or thermal equipment. For olive oil, the liquid-container lines distinguish lined or heat-insulated tanks from other tanks, which are divided by capacity. The table separates lined and insulated examples sharing the same commodity code.

The applicable liquid-tank lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or attached import control on these lines. Zero customs duty does not establish food-contact compliance.

Confirm the capacity, lining, insulation and fitted equipment before choosing the commodity code. Tanks fitted with agitators or heating or cooling jackets fall outside this unequipped scope. See the wider steel storage tank guide for other tank types.

Specify the oil-contact surfaces and drainage

State that the tank stores olive oil at atmospheric pressure. Agree capacity, stainless grade, plate thickness, internal finish, weld treatment and passivation. Draw the filling connection, vent, manway, sampling point and outlet, including their positions. Specify whether the bottom must drain completely and how operators will reach surfaces for cleaning.

Confirm with the relevant food-safety authority how Regulation 1935/2004 applies to the tank, including requirements concerning substance transfer that could endanger health, change food composition or impair taste or smell. Ask for supporting evidence covering the finished tank and its oil-contact seals, valves and any lining under the intended storage conditions. A plate material certificate alone does not address every contact component.

Business operators should be able to identify the businesses supplying and receiving food-contact materials and articles. Keep the tank identification linked to supplier records, material certificates and customer deliveries. Have a competent adviser confirm whether the atmospheric tank falls outside the pressure equipment regulations described in the wider guide; review the design separately if pressurisation is proposed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: four unequipped stainless steel olive oil storage tanks, each holding 20,000 litres under 7309 00 59 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £8,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £68,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £68,000, so it is £13,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match plate certificates to the tank, verify the agreed stainless grade and measure thickness against the drawing.

Welds and finish: inspect internal seams, weld treatment and passivation; check for cracks, pits, sharp edges and retained polishing debris.

Seals and drainage: check gasket materials against the specification, operate valves and closures, witness the agreed leak test and demonstrate drainage.

Arrival: photograph dents, distorted supports and damaged connections before installation; compare identification and supplied documents with the inspected tank.

What goes wrong

A tank can match the external drawing while leaving rough internal welds, inaccessible pockets or an outlet that retains oil. Unapproved gasket substitutions and missing evidence for a lining leave the buyer unable to assess the complete oil-contact assembly. Put these checks in the purchase specification and inspection brief.

Transit damage can distort a manway or outlet even when the shell looks intact. Agree lifting points, support and transport bracing with the fabricator, then check these areas on arrival. Use factory verification to assess the fabricator's welding, finishing and testing capability before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on olive oil storage tanks from China?

The applicable liquid-container lines in heading 7309 carry 0% duty for China in the supplied tariff record, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The tanks must exceed 300 litres and have no mechanical or thermal equipment.

Does an insulated olive oil tank use the same code as a plain tank?

No. Lined or heat-insulated liquid tanks use 7309 00 30 00. Other liquid tanks use 7309 00 59 00 up to 100,000 litres or 7309 00 51 00 above that capacity, within this heading's scope.

Is a stainless steel certificate enough for food-contact compliance?

A plate certificate identifies the material but does not assess the finished tank, seals, valves or lining. Ask for supporting evidence addressing the intended olive oil contact and storage conditions.

What should I check before accepting an olive oil tank?

Check material identity, thickness, internal welds, finish, seals, valve operation, leak-test records and drainage. Inspect transport damage and match the tank identification to its documents.
