Duty and waste controls for unactivated zeolite

Heading 2530 covers mineral substances not elsewhere specified or included. For unactivated natural zeolite, check the residual line 2530 90 70 90 against the mineral identity and processing history. The physical forms shown in the table share this candidate code; they are not separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, this line carried 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension was recorded. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their application to the shipment with your customs broker. For waste imports into England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent.

Give your broker the mineral analysis, intended use and details of crushing, washing, drying or other treatment to confirm the commodity code. For treated material, compare the activated natural zeolite guide. If importing this substance for the first time, consider whether UK REACH registration is required.

Specify the deposit, mineral content and grading

Specify the quarry or deposit, declared zeolite mineral and mineral content, particle-size distribution, fines, moisture and loose bulk density. Ask for mineralogical analysis rather than accepting a general description such as natural mineral absorbent. Record whether the material has been washed, dried, heated, chemically treated or blended.

For filtration or absorbent trials, agree the test liquid, contact conditions and acceptance criteria. Compare the shipment sample with the approved sample under the same conditions. Specify packaging liners, batch identification and sampling arrangements. Keep the purchasing brief limited to the intended industrial use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of unactivated natural zeolite granules in bulk bags under 2530 90 70 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,200, so it is £2,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the deposit, batch identifiers and mineralogical report to the shipment; check for undeclared blends or treatments.

Grading: sieve representative samples against the agreed particle-size distribution and check fines generated during handling.

Condition: measure moisture and bulk density; inspect for caking, foreign matter, broken granules and dusty residues.

Packing: check bag seams, liners and closures on arrival; retain a sample from each identified batch for comparison with the approved material.

What goes wrong

A sample from a selected seam can differ from the shipped material in mineral content and performance. Excess fines can cloud a trial liquid or restrict flow through a packed bed. Damp powder can cake, while handling can break granules and change the grading.

Another failure is unclear product history: the supplier offers treated, blended or previously used material against an unactivated mineral specification. Obtain a written process description and check it against the batch documents before shipment. Use factory verification to examine the supplier's separation, grading and batch-control practices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on unactivated natural zeolite from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 2530 90 70 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm that this residual mineral code fits your material.

Does the waste control apply to newly quarried zeolite?

The tariff attaches waste controls to the code. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to your shipment and document whether the material is newly quarried or previously used.

What should a natural zeolite specification include?

Include the deposit, mineral identity and content, processing history, particle-size distribution, fines, moisture, bulk density and agreed performance test.

Does unactivated natural zeolite need UK REACH registration?

For a substance you have not previously imported, HSE says to consider whether registration is required. Check the actual mineral identity and treatment history before deciding.
