Sourcing Petalite from China

Petalite suitable for lithium extraction carries 0% UK duty from China, with no trade remedy recorded in the supplied tariff snapshot. The tariff attaches waste controls: confirm whether the shipment is a mineral product or waste before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources petalite.

Petalite duty and waste controls

Heading 2530 covers mineral substances not elsewhere specified or included. Its lithium-mineral line, 2530 90 40 00, expressly includes petalite suitable for lithium extraction. The table shows buying forms under that same commodity line, rather than separate tariff classifications. For the wider heading, see our natural strontianite guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied snapshot records 0% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. It attaches import and export waste controls. If material from China falls under import notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Confirm the shipment's waste status and applicable requirements with your customs broker before dispatch.

Confirm the commodity code using mineral identity, processing history and suitability for lithium extraction. Give the broker the analysis, intended use and details of any additives or heat treatment. For the illustrative calculation, use our import duty and VAT guide.

Specify petalite chemistry and processing

Specify petalite identity, mine source, lithium content and whether the assay is reported as lithium or lithium oxide. Agree iron, sodium, potassium, moisture and particle-size limits with your processor. State whether results are on a dry basis and identify the test methods. For glass or ceramic use, approve a sample in your own formulation and firing process.

Ask for the processing history, including grinding, concentration, heat treatment and additives, and have your adviser check the UK REACH position for the actual material. Where UK REACH applies, businesses must identify and manage substance risks when placing goods on the Great Britain market. Keep batch analysis and handling information together.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of petalite in lined bulk bags under 2530 90 40 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,200, so it is £2,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check an independent mineral identification against the approved petalite sample and declared mine source.

Chemistry: check the batch assay for lithium, iron and agreed impurities, including the reporting basis.

Grading: check sieve results and moisture against the specification; examine arrival samples for segregation, lumps and foreign material.

Packing: check liners, seams, net weight and batch markings on arrival; retain a representative sample for comparison. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A lithium assay alone does not establish petalite identity. Mixed lithium minerals can pass a chemistry check yet behave differently in the buyer's process. Confusing lithium with lithium oxide, or wet-basis with dry-basis results, also makes apparently matching certificates misleading.

Iron contamination can affect fired colour, while inconsistent grading and moisture can change feeding and mixing. A selected sample may hide variation across the shipment. Agree representative sampling and acceptance tests before ordering, and check the processor and mineral source through factory verification.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on petalite from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% for petalite suitable for lithium extraction under 2530 90 40 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension.

Does the waste control apply to all petalite?

The tariff attaches a waste control to the code. Confirm the actual material's waste status with your broker. For imports under notification controls, the exporter applies to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent.

What should a petalite certificate of analysis show?

Batch identity, lithium reporting basis, iron and agreed impurities, moisture, particle size and test methods. Check mineral identity separately rather than relying only on lithium content.

Can I buy petalite using only the supplier's sample?

Approve a process trial, then compare representative shipment samples with it. Check chemistry, mineral identity, grading and moisture before shipment and again on arrival.
