Sourcing Natural Strontianite from China

Natural strontianite from China carries 0% UK duty under the tariff line shared with celestine. Confirm whether the shipment is mineral stock or waste: the tariff attaches waste controls, and notified waste needs authority consent before shipment. Cambridge China Bridge sources natural strontianite.

Natural strontianite duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, natural strontianite falls within heading 2530, mineral substances not elsewhere specified or included. Its line, 2530 90 30 00, covers celestine and strontianite. The duty on goods from China is 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded in the supplied tariff facts.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to this line. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to the proposed goods from China. For waste entering England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

The table repeats the shared tariff code for different physical forms of natural strontianite. Confirm the commodity code using mineral identity and processing history, particularly if the supplier offers manufactured strontium carbonate. See the celestite mineral guide for the related mineral.

Specify mineral identity and assay

State that the order is for natural strontianite, rather than celestine or manufactured strontium carbonate. Ask for the mine or deposit, processing history and a representative sample. Agree whether the assay reports strontium content or strontium carbonate content, and whether results are on a dry basis.

Specify lump or powder form, particle size distribution, moisture and acceptable calcium, barium, iron and insoluble matter. Agree sampling and test methods before ordering. UK REACH generally applies to individual chemical substances; ask a chemical compliance adviser to check the position for the mineral and its processing history.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of natural strontianite in lined bulk bags under 2530 90 30 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,200, so it is £2,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the received mineral with the approved sample and obtain mineral identification where the assay alone cannot establish identity.

Assay: check that the analysis certificate matches the shipment lot, agreed reporting basis and impurity specification.

Size and moisture: sieve representative samples, check moisture and look for excessive fines or hardened powder.

Packing: check bag seams, liners, lot identification and net weight; photograph leakage, wet bags and contamination before unloading.

What goes wrong

A supplier may offer celestine or manufactured carbonate against a brief for natural strontianite. A strontium assay alone does not settle mineral identity. Differences between wet and dry reporting bases can also make the shipment appear to match the sample when it does not.

Mixed particle sizes, moisture and torn liners can disrupt feeding and handling. Approve a representative lot sample and retain it for comparison on arrival. If paperwork describes tailings, residues or waste, resolve the waste-control position with your broker before booking shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on natural strontianite from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty under 2530 90 30 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Is natural strontianite the same as manufactured strontium carbonate?

The purchasing brief should distinguish natural mineral from manufactured chemical. Ask for deposit origin, processing history and mineral identification before confirming the code.

Do waste controls apply to my strontianite shipment?

The tariff attaches waste controls. Ask your broker to confirm whether they apply. Waste entering England under notification controls needs consent before shipment.

What should a strontianite analysis certificate show?

Ask for lot identification, the agreed strontium or carbonate assay basis, moisture and specified impurities. Check mineral identity separately if the certificate reports only chemical composition.
