Sourcing Celestite Mineral from China

Celestite mineral from China carries 0% UK duty under the celestine and strontianite line, with no recorded trade remedy. The tariff attaches a waste control: confirm its application before shipping, especially for recovered material. Agree mineral identity, assay and grading before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources celestite mineral.

Celestite mineral duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2530 covers mineral substances not elsewhere specified or included. Celestite, also called celestine, falls within the celestine and strontianite line, code 2530 90 30 00. The table repeats this tariff line for different mineral supply forms.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. It attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm the import requirement with your customs broker. For waste entering England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Confirm the commodity code using the mineral identity and processing history. Describe any chemical treatment separately rather than relying on the supplier's trade name. For the wider heading, see the vermiculite and perlite guide.

Specify celestite identity, assay and grading

State whether you need lump mineral, crushed feed, ground material or concentrate. Ask for the mine source, processing history and a representative sample. Agree strontium sulphate content, the reporting basis, moisture, particle-size distribution and acceptable foreign minerals. Require the batch assay to identify the sampled lot and test method. Do not accept colour alone as proof of identity or purity.

For a substance you have not previously manufactured or imported, HSE says you need to consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Ask your adviser to assess the actual mineral and its treatment history before ordering, and keep the assessment with the batch documents.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of natural celestite concentrate in bulk bags under 2530 90 30 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,200, so it is £2,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the delivered mineral with the approved sample and confirm mineral identity through laboratory analysis where needed.

Assay: check strontium sulphate content, moisture and agreed impurities against a representative shipment sample and the matching batch report.

Grading: sieve crushed or ground material against the agreed distribution; check lumps for excessive fines and mixed grades.

Packing: inspect bulk bags, liners and closures on arrival; reconcile bag markings and delivered weights with the packing list.

What goes wrong

A selected sample can conceal variation across the shipment. Excess foreign mineral lowers the usable content, moisture changes the apparent assay basis, and excess fines alter handling. Reports can describe another lot or omit whether results are on a dry basis. Agree sampling and acceptance criteria before dispatch.

Recovered material can arrive described simply as mineral concentrate, leaving its waste status unresolved. Have the broker confirm the tariff control before shipment. Retain a sealed sample from the delivered batch and compare disputed results using the agreed test method.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on celestite from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty under 2530 90 30 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension.

Are celestite and celestine the same mineral?

Celestine is the name used in the tariff line for celestite. Ask the supplier to confirm mineral identity and provide a batch assay rather than relying on the trade name.

What should a celestite specification include?

Specify mineral identity, mine source, processing history, strontium sulphate content, moisture, impurities and particle-size distribution. Agree the assay basis and sampling method.

Does the waste control apply to my celestite shipment?

The tariff attaches a waste control. Ask your customs broker to confirm its application to the actual material, especially recovered material. Notified waste entering England needs consent before shipment.
