Zero duty for activated natural zeolite

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 3802 covers activated carbon, activated natural mineral products and animal black. Activated natural zeolite within this heading falls under the residual line 3802 90 00 90, carrying 0% duty from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. The table describes product forms sharing this tariff line.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import waste control and also lists an export waste control. Confirm whether the Chinese shipment is a product or waste with your customs broker. For waste entering England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Ask the broker to confirm the requirements for the actual material and route.

Ask for mineral composition, the activation process and any additives before confirming the commodity code. Do not classify solely from the supplier's product name. Import VAT is normally 20%; the valuation method is explained in UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the mineral and activation process

Specify natural zeolite rather than synthetic zeolite, the mineral identity, source deposit and agreed mineral composition. Ask the factory to describe washing, heating, chemical treatment and subsequent drying separately. Record whether the material is unused or recovered, and identify any added salts, binders or coatings.

Agree particle-size distribution, fines, moisture, bulk density, resistance to breakdown and the adsorption or ion-exchange test relevant to your process. For ammonium removal, agree the test solution and operating conditions so that batch results are comparable. Keep an approved sample and request batch-specific laboratory results.

Before importing a substance for the first time, consider whether it requires registration under UK REACH. Give your adviser the actual composition and treatment history rather than assuming that the description 'natural mineral' settles the question. Match the proposed grade to its intended use before placing an order.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of activated natural zeolite granules under 3802 90 00 90, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,100, so it is £620. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the batch certificate, mineral analysis and activation record with the approved specification.

Grading: sieve representative samples and check fines and broken granules against the agreed limits.

Performance: repeat the agreed adsorption or ion-exchange test under the same conditions used for the approved sample.

Packing: check moisture, bag seals, batch markings and net weight; retain arrival samples before blending lots. Arrange checks through testing and certification.

What goes wrong

A supplier may describe washed or dried stone as activated without explaining the treatment. Different deposits or a change in mineral composition can produce different performance despite similar appearance. A generic adsorption result is difficult to compare if the test liquid and operating conditions are missing.

Weak granules can break down during transport, leaving dust and an uneven filter bed. Damp material adds weight and can undermine a drying specification. Hold affected batches apart until the agreed checks are complete. For the wider activated-mineral heading, see activated bauxite filtration media.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on activated natural zeolite from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for 3802 90 00 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed for that line. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Does natural zeolite need UK REACH registration?

Consider registration applicability before importing a new substance. Provide its composition and activation history; do not assume the word 'natural' establishes its status.

Can I import spent zeolite from China?

Confirm its waste status and route with your customs broker. Waste entering England under notification controls cannot ship until the Environment Agency and other competent authorities involved have consented.

What should I test on arrival?

Check mineral identity, grading, fines, moisture and packing. Repeat the agreed adsorption or ion-exchange test using the approved sample's test conditions, and retain samples by batch.
