Sourcing ultrasonic thickness gauges from China

Ultrasonic thickness gauges classified as instruments for measuring geometrical quantities carry 0% UK duty from China, with no listed trade remedies. For sale in Great Britain, check electromagnetic compatibility obligations as well as measurement performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources ultrasonic thickness gauges.

Duty and classification for thickness gauges

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9031 covers measuring or checking instruments not specified elsewhere. Its duty range is 0% to 2%, but the geometrical measurement line relevant to ultrasonic thickness gauges carries 0%. The table separates gauge configurations sharing that line; these are not separate tariff subdivisions.

The geometrical measurement and parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to the parts line and the other-instruments line. Confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker rather than assuming that the heading-wide control applies to every gauge.

Confirm the commodity code using the instrument's function and the contents of the shipment, especially separately supplied probes and accessories. For wider heading context, see surface roughness testers.

Specify the material, probe and measurement mode

Describe the material, expected thickness range, surface condition, curvature and access. Agree accuracy and repeatability on representative samples, not just the display resolution. Specify probe compatibility, replaceable cables, couplant, calibration blocks and whether the instrument must measure through a coating.

Agree the sound-velocity settings, calibration procedure and treatment of unstable readings. Ask for a calibration certificate traceable to national standards and a demonstration on your own samples. Confirm stored-record export, software access and replacement probe availability.

For Great Britain sales, check electromagnetic compatibility conformity assessment and importer identification. Manufacturers must supply relevant English instructions. Importers must retain the declaration of conformity and technical documentation for 10 years. Also obtain evidence addressing restrictions on hazardous substances in electrical equipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of four ultrasonic thickness gauge kits under 9031 80 20 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Measurement: compare readings with calibrated reference thicknesses across the agreed working range, using the supplied probe and recorded material settings.

Surfaces: test coated, curved and corroded samples relevant to your work; check whether the display reports substrate thickness or includes the coating.

Probe and kit: check connectors, cable strain relief, probe face condition, calibration blocks, couplant and the agreed accessories.

Records and documents: match serial identification to calibration records, check English instructions and conformity documents, and confirm that saved readings export correctly. Set the acceptance method in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A stable display can still show the wrong thickness when the sound velocity is set for another material. Poor coupling, rough surfaces and unsuitable probes can produce misleading or intermittent readings. A demonstration on clean flat steel does not establish performance on your coated pipework.

Treat coating discrimination and minimum measurable thickness as claims to test on agreed samples. Repeat the acceptance checks on arrival, retain the settings and readings, and investigate unexpected results before using the gauge to make maintenance decisions.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ultrasonic thickness gauges from China?

The geometrical measurement line 9031 80 20 00 carries 0% duty from China, with no listed trade remedies. Confirm that the gauge's function fits this line.

Can an ultrasonic thickness gauge measure through paint?

Specify whether you need substrate thickness without the coating. Ask the factory to demonstrate the proposed gauge and probe on your coated samples.

What calibration evidence should I request?

Request a traceable calibration certificate and recorded checks on reference thicknesses, identifying the gauge, probe, material settings and agreed acceptance criteria.

What documents should accompany a gauge sold in Great Britain?

Check conformity documents, importer identification and English instructions. Under electromagnetic compatibility rules, retain the declaration of conformity and technical documentation for 10 years.
