Sourcing surface roughness testers from China

Surface roughness testers from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant instrument and parts lines. Confirm the code from the measuring method and check applicable electrical conformity requirements before sale in Great Britain. Agree probe access, measurement settings and calibration evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources surface roughness testers.

Duty and classification for roughness testers

Heading 9031 covers measuring and checking instruments not specified elsewhere in the chapter. For surface roughness testers, distinguish contact instruments measuring geometrical quantities from optical instruments. The table shows candidate instrument lines and parts, rather than interchangeable classifications. See the wider measuring and inspection guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty on goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to 9031 80 80 00 and 9031 90 00 00. Confirm the requirement with your customs broker. Products containing banned F-gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market.

Give your broker the measuring principle, intended function and details of separately shipped probes or accessories to confirm the commodity code. A supplier's description of a product as a roughness tester does not settle which line applies.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026.

Specify the probe and measurement settings

Specify contact or optical measurement, the roughness parameters required by your drawings, measuring range, resolution and agreed accuracy. For contact testers, record stylus geometry, measuring force, skid arrangement, traverse length and access to bores or recesses. Agree the filtering, cut-off and evaluation settings used for acceptance.

List the reference specimen, fixtures, replacement stylus, charger and software included. Request traceable calibration evidence and demonstrate report export using your own parts. For electronic models within scope, check electromagnetic conformity evidence and hazardous-substance compliance. Under electromagnetic compatibility rules, importers must check conformity assessment and provide their identifying details and postal address.

If you import electrical equipment for sale, check waste-electrical producer responsibilities and annual registration. Equipment brought into the UK solely for your own use is excluded from the producer definition in the official guidance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of four portable surface roughness testers under 9031 80 20 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,900, so it is £1,380. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Measurement: repeat readings on the agreed reference specimen and representative parts using the contractual settings; compare results with the agreed acceptance limits.

Probe access: inspect the stylus and connector, then demonstrate measurement on the actual bore, recess or curved surface for which the tester was ordered.

Documents: match the instrument identity to calibration evidence, conformity documents and supplied accessories; check English instructions for electronic apparatus within electromagnetic compatibility scope.

Arrival: inspect packaging and probe protection, repeat the reference check after unpacking, and test charging, saved settings and report export. Use the inspection guide to record acceptance.

What goes wrong

A tester can reproduce its reference specimen reading yet fail to reach the surface on your component. Different filtering or evaluation settings can also produce apparently conflicting results. Approve a demonstration on your own parts and save the agreed settings with the acceptance report.

A damaged stylus, unstable support or vibration can spoil repeatability. Missing probe spares and software that cannot export the required report create further problems. Agree replacement parts and export formats before ordering, then repeat the agreed measurement checks on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on surface roughness testers from China?

The selected instrument and parts lines carry 0% duty, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff facts. Confirm the classification for your model.

Which commodity code covers a contact roughness tester?

9031 80 20 00 is the candidate line for instruments measuring geometrical quantities. Confirm it from the instrument's measuring principle and function; optical models need separate consideration.

What calibration evidence should I ask for?

Request a certificate identifying the instrument and traceability, plus results on the supplied reference specimen. Agree a demonstration on your own parts using the settings required by your drawings.

Does a battery-powered roughness tester need compliance checks?

Battery power alone does not settle scope. Check applicable electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance requirements, conformity evidence and English instructions for the complete model.
