Sourcing ultrasonic cleaning machines from China

Candidate lines for ultrasonic cleaning machines and dedicated parts carry 0% to 2% UK duty from China, subject to classification. For mains-powered machines intended for sale in Great Britain, confirm the applicable electrical safety documentation and conformity marking requirements with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources ultrasonic cleaning machines.

Duty and classification for ultrasonic cleaners

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8543 covers electrical machines with individual functions not specified elsewhere in the chapter. The supplied tariff contains no named ultrasonic-cleaner line. The table shows machine variants sharing the residual candidate code 8543 70 90 99, plus the candidate parts line 8543 90 90 00. These are classification starting points.

The residual machine line carries 2% duty from China; the parts line carries 0%. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The machine-line suspension is limited to specified electronic products; do not assume a cleaner qualifies. The tariff attaches a torture-goods import prohibition, fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and an export restriction. Listed torture goods are prohibited; for the cleaner, confirm control applicability and declaration requirements with your customs broker. The parts line also flags the export restriction.

Give your broker the operating description, tank arrangement, heating system and details of any integrated handling equipment to confirm the commodity code. Separately imported components need their own review. For the wider product category, see machinery and industrial equipment.

Specify the tank and prove the cleaning process

Specify usable tank dimensions with the basket fitted, working liquid capacity, tank material, drain position, lid and basket loading. Define ultrasonic frequency, continuous ultrasonic output separately from heater power, temperature control, timer, degassing and sweep functions. Agree the cleaning liquid and representative workpieces before accepting a sample.

For mains equipment within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, check technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. English instructions must accompany the equipment. Electromagnetic compatibility requirements address emissions and immunity, so request reports matching the generator and control electronics. For resale, arrange annual electrical-equipment producer registration. Use testing and certification to review the documents for the supplied model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 industrial ultrasonic cleaning machines under 8543 70 90 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tank and basket: measure usable clearance, inspect welds and drain fittings, and check for leaks with the agreed liquid before and after a cleaning cycle.

Cleaning performance: run representative soiled workpieces with the agreed loading, liquid and settings; compare residual contamination and coverage across the basket with the approved sample.

Controls and safety: check heating accuracy, timer operation, drain sealing and fitted protective functions; have competent personnel check electrical safety against the agreed test plan.

Documents and packing: match the machine identity to its declaration and reports, check English instructions and importer identification, and inspect transducer mounting and transport damage on arrival. Agree these checks through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A quoted tank capacity can conceal limited basket clearance, and combined heater and ultrasonic wattage can obscure cleaning output. Loose transducers, uneven cleaning, leaking drain valves and temperature drift are useful failure checks. Reject a sample that only demonstrates cleaning with an empty basket; repeat the trial with your actual loading.

A generic report can describe different electronics from those shipped. Record the approved generator, heater and controller configuration, and require approval before substitutions. If the machine includes refrigerant cooling, obtain the gas identity and charge details for broker review: imported fluorinated-gas equipment has labelling requirements. Do not infer control clearance from the tariff code alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ultrasonic cleaners from China?

The supplied tariff lists 2% for candidate machine code 8543 70 90 99 and 0% for candidate parts code 8543 90 90 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm classification for the actual goods.

Can I rely on a CE mark on an ultrasonic cleaner?

Check the declaration, technical documentation and reports against the exact machine. For mains equipment within the electrical safety rules, conformity marking is only part of the compliance checks.

How do I compare ultrasonic cleaning performance?

Use the same soiled workpieces, basket loading, liquid, temperature and cycle settings. Compare residual contamination across the basket, and separate ultrasonic output from heater power.

What tank size should I order?

Specify usable dimensions with the basket fitted and enough clearance for your workpieces. Confirm working liquid capacity, basket loading, drain access and the cleaning result with a sample trial.
