Sourcing UHMWPE engineering rods from China
UHMWPE engineering rod stock from China carries a flat 6% UK duty under 3916 10 00 90. UK REACH requires safe-use information when supplied articles contain Candidate List substances above 0.1% by weight. Specify the resin grade and machining allowance. Cambridge China Bridge sources UHMWPE engineering rods.

Flat 6% duty on polyethylene rod stock
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3916 covers plastic monofilament, rods, sticks and profile shapes. For UHMWPE engineering rod stock, the relevant supplied line is 3916 10 00 90, covering other goods of polymers of ethylene. The table shows purchasing variants under this same tariff line.
The supplied tariff record shows 6% duty for goods from China on this line, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Suspensions elsewhere in the heading concern different plastics and do not provide a duty reduction for these polyethylene rods.
Ask your broker to confirm the commodity code using the formulation, drawing and extent of machining. For other materials, see the wider plastic rods and profiles guide. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural-colour UHMWPE extruded rod stock | 3916 10 00 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the resin and usable machining stock
Write out ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in the purchase specification. Agree the resin manufacturer and grade, virgin or reprocessed content, colour, additives and production method. Ask for batch evidence supporting the claimed molecular weight and its test method. A colour match or density result alone does not establish the agreed resin grade.
Specify diameter tolerance, ovality, straightness, length, end condition and machining allowance. Describe the intended bearing, bush or wear-part application, load, mating surface and operating temperature. Machine an approved sample and check dimensional stability before accepting the production specification.
For Great Britain, UK REACH applies to substances in articles. Check the formulation against its Candidate List: supplying an article containing a listed substance above 0.1% by weight requires safe-use information, including the substance name. For intended food-contact parts, ask for a declaration of compliance and migration evidence matched to the exact formulation and intended use.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: A mixed-diameter batch of rod stock for an engineering workshop, illustrative under 3916 10 00 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 6% is £570. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,070, so it is £2,014. Import taxes total £2,584; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £570 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material identity: match rod markings and bundle labels to the resin grade, production batch and agreed certificate; investigate substitutions or undeclared reprocessed content.
Dimensions: measure diameter in different directions and along the rod, then check length, ovality and straightness against the agreed drawing.
Internal condition: examine cut sections for voids, inclusions and poorly consolidated material; machine samples to check the usable allowance and movement after machining.
Packing and records: check support against bending, protection from gouging, batch separation and matching documents on arrival; use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong
Ordinary polyethylene may be supplied against an UHMWPE description, or an undeclared change in resin or reprocessed content may undermine the agreed performance. A generic material certificate can hide the mismatch. Keep an approved sample and require certificates that identify the delivered batch.
Bent or oval rods leave insufficient machining allowance. Internal voids may appear only after turning, while residual stress can move the finished dimensions. Agree how defective stock will be assessed, and check a machined sample before releasing the batch for production.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on UHMWPE rods from China?
The supplied UK Trade Tariff record shows 6% under 3916 10 00 90, with no listed trade remedy or suspension on that line. Confirm the code for your formulation and supplied condition.
How do I check that rods are really UHMWPE?
Specify the resin manufacturer and grade, obtain batch-specific evidence supporting molecular weight, and agree its test method. Colour and density alone do not establish the grade.
Can I use these rods for food-contact parts?
Ask for a declaration of compliance and migration evidence covering the exact formulation, colour and intended contact conditions. Check the finished part's use before approving the material.
Why do UHMWPE rods move after machining?
Residual stress can change dimensions as material is removed. Machine a sample, check it again after an agreed conditioning period, and confirm that the stock provides enough allowance.
