Sourcing nylon engineering rods from China

Nylon engineering rods from China normally carry 6% UK duty; the range is 0% to 6% where a narrowly specified cellular rod qualifies for suspension. Heading 3916 covers rods whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked. Check the formulation and supplied condition before choosing the code. Ordinary rods and the specific suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 3916 covers plastic rods, sticks and profile shapes, whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked. Ordinary nylon engineering rods fall within the condensation-polymer branch, normally 3916 90 10 90. The table separates buying forms sharing that code. See the wider plastic rods guide.

The supplied tariff record shows 6% duty for Chinese-origin goods on both relevant lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls. Line 3916 90 10 10 has a 0.00 % suspension for the specified cellular rods. Its description includes polyamide-6, inorganic fillers of 10% to 25% by weight and, if present, polytetrafluoroethylene of 7% to 9%. Ordinary solid nylon rods do not match that description.

The suspension footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing the listed products. Give your customs broker the formulation, cellular or solid structure, manufacturing route and details of any subsequent machining. Confirm the commodity code before relying on a suspension.

Specify nylon grade and machining condition

Specify the exact polyamide grade, cast or extruded manufacture, unfilled or modified formulation, colour and permitted recycled content. Agree diameter, length, ovality, straightness and machining allowance against a drawing. Record the moisture condition used for dimensional acceptance, storage instructions and the intended operating environment.

Ask for batch-linked material identification and a machining sample. Trial the actual turning, drilling or boring operation, then check dimensions after the agreed conditioning period. For filled or lubricated grades, obtain the additive identity and content rather than accepting a generic nylon description.

For supply in Great Britain, UK REACH requires safe-use information when an article contains a Candidate List substance above 0.1% by weight. Information must include the substance name and be supplied to business recipients. Ask the factory for composition evidence covering the rod's pigments, fillers and lubricants.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed-diameter batch of nylon engineering rods for a machining workshop under 3916 90 10 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 6% is £570. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,070, so it is £2,014. Import taxes total £2,584; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £570 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: compare batch certificates, grade identification and formulation with the purchase specification; retain a sample from each lot.

Dimensions: measure diameter along the rod and around its circumference; check length, ovality and straightness in the agreed moisture condition.

Internal quality: inspect cut ends and sample sections for voids, inclusions and cracks; machine a sample to expose defects below the surface.

Packing: check dry wrapping, supported bundles, protected ends and batch labels on arrival. Record damage before releasing stock. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Nylon absorbs moisture, so rods accepted in one condition can change dimensions before machining or assembly. Residual stress can cause movement during machining, while internal voids may appear only after boring. A substituted grade or undocumented filler can change wear behaviour and leave the material unsuitable for the intended part.

Agree the conditioning and acceptance method before production. Keep batches separate and trial replacement grades before releasing them to the workshop. Do not budget on the cellular-rod suspension simply because a supplier describes the material as filled nylon.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nylon rods from China?

Ordinary nylon rods under 3916 90 10 90 carry 6%. The specified cellular rods under 3916 90 10 10 have a 0.00 % suspension. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Can filled nylon rods qualify for zero duty?

Filler content alone is insufficient. The rod must match the cellular structure and composition listed under 3916 90 10 10, and satisfy the suspension footnote. Confirm this with your customs broker.

Should I buy cast or extruded nylon rods?

Specify the route required by your application, then compare batch data and machining samples. Agree moisture condition, machining allowance and dimensional acceptance rather than buying on colour alone.

Why do nylon rods move after machining?

Moisture changes and residual stress can alter dimensions. Trial the actual machining operation and measure again after the agreed conditioning period before approving the batch.
