Sourcing transformer bobbins from China

Transformer insulating bobbins from China under heading 8547 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant material categories. The heading covers insulating fittings with only minor metal assembly components; conducting terminals need a separate classification check. Cambridge China Bridge sources transformer insulating bobbins.

0% duty on transformer insulating bobbins

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8547 covers insulating fittings for electrical equipment, wholly of insulating material apart from minor metal components incorporated during moulding solely for assembly. This guide concerns transformer winding bobbins. See the wider insulating fittings guide.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for Chinese-origin plastic, ceramic and other insulating fittings, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. The plastic designs in the table share a commodity code. The separately listed battery-module mica component is outside this guide.

Confirm the commodity code using the material specification, drawing and function of any metal parts. Conducting terminals are different from minor assembly inserts, so do not automatically classify a pinned bobbin as an insulating fitting. See the import duty and VAT guide when calculating landed costs.

Specify the winding space and core fit

Specify the resin or ceramic grade, colour, operating temperature, dielectric strength, flammability and tracking performance. Give the factory a controlled drawing showing the core opening, winding width, flange thickness, partitions, lead exits and mounting features. Identify the surfaces that contact winding wire and agree tolerances with the transformer designer.

Government guidance says component parts sold business to business are outside the scope of the hazardous-substance regulations in Great Britain. For bobbins incorporated into electrical equipment within scope, obtain material declarations supporting the finished product's compliance. Match those declarations to the actual resin grade and colour supplied.

Approve samples through winding and core assembly before releasing production. Check whether winding tension bends the flanges, whether wire catches at lead exits, and whether the core seats without forcing the bobbin. Agree application-specific testing through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 100,000 plastic transformer insulating bobbins; illustrative order, not a quotation under 8547 20 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,700. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,700, so it is £3,140. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: check batch certificates against the approved grade and colour, and match claimed performance reports to the supplied material.

Dimensions: measure the core opening, winding space, flange thickness and partitions across mould cavities; compare results with the drawing.

Surface and assembly: check for flash, sharp edges, cracks and warping; wind samples and trial-fit the intended core.

Packing and traceability: check batch identification, cavity records and protection against crushed flanges. Repeat dimensional and assembly checks on arrival before releasing stock. Use the quality inspection guide to define the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A bobbin can resemble the approved sample yet fail during winding or core insertion. Flash can catch wire, warped flanges can reduce usable winding space, and an undersized opening can prevent the core seating. Ceramic bobbins can arrive with cracks or chipped edges.

Resin substitution can change flammability and tracking performance. Lock the material grade and drawing revision into the order, require approval before changes, and retain bulk samples for comparison. Do not accept a generic material report as evidence for a different grade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on transformer bobbins from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for plastic, ceramic and other insulating fittings under heading 8547, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can bobbins with terminal pins use the same commodity code?

Do not assume so. Heading 8547 permits minor metal components solely for assembly. Conducting terminals need a classification check using the drawing and their function.

What should I specify for a plastic transformer bobbin?

Specify the exact resin grade, temperature and insulation performance, core opening, winding space, flange and partition dimensions, lead exits and drawing tolerances.

How do I check whether the bobbin fits my transformer?

Wind approved samples with the intended wire and trial-fit the intended core. Check flange distortion, wire snagging and core seating, then repeat these checks on bulk samples.
