Sourcing insulating conduit fittings from China

Insulating electrical conduit fittings from China classified under heading 8547 carry a uniform 0% UK duty. Classification depends on material and construction, including whether metal joints have an insulating lining. Check the drawing and material evidence before ordering. UK duty on insulating conduit fittings

Heading 8547 covers fittings wholly of insulating material, apart from minor metal components incorporated during moulding solely for assembly. It also covers base-metal electrical conduit tubing and joints lined with insulating material. This guide focuses on conduit fittings; see the wider insulating fittings guide for other electrical applications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, every supplied line carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. The table separates other insulating fittings and lined metal joints sharing the same code; the listed battery mica component is outside this guide's scope.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, section drawing, lining construction and intended function. For the illustrative plastic fitting order, the FOB value and freight are illustrative rather than a supplier quotation. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the conduit interface and insulation

Give the factory a drawing identifying the mating conduit, thread form, engagement length, bore, shoulder and edge profile. Specify the insulating material and grade, temperature range, colour, dimensional tolerances and packing. For lined metal joints, define the metal body, liner material, coverage and retention method.

Agree flammability, tracking resistance and dielectric tests appropriate to the intended application. Where the fitting becomes part of an electrical product covered by hazardous-substance restrictions, request material declarations supporting that product's compliance. Obtain composition information and check whether UK REACH notification duties for substances on the Candidate List apply to your imports into Great Britain.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of plastic insulating conduit bushes under 8547 20 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,700. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,700, so it is £3,140. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: assemble sampled fittings with the buyer's actual conduit and mating parts; check thread engagement, bore clearance and seating.

Material: match the resin or ceramic grade to the approved specification and supporting material certificates; investigate any substitution.

Insulation: check liners for gaps, exposed edges and movement; examine mouldings and ceramics for cracks, voids and flash.

Batch evidence: match test reports and material declarations to the supplied product and batch; repeat agreed performance checks on bulk samples.

What goes wrong

A fitting can match the nominal conduit size but have the wrong thread or insufficient engagement. Flash and sharp liner edges can damage cable insulation. Loose liners move during assembly, while brittle bushes crack when tightened. Material substitution can change the agreed insulation and heat performance.

Approve an assembled sample using your own mating parts, lock the material grade and drawing into the order, and inspect production samples before shipment. Repeat the fit check on arrival before releasing stock. See quality inspection explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on insulating conduit fittings from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty across heading 8547, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that your fitting belongs in this heading.

Are all plastic conduit accessories classified under this heading?

Do not classify by the supplier's catalogue name alone. Check the material, construction and insulating function against the heading description.

What should I send the Chinese factory?

Send a dimensioned drawing, mating conduit details, material grade, thread specification, performance checks and an approved assembled sample.

How do I check an insulating liner?

Check coverage, retention, cracks and exposed edges. Assemble the joint with the intended conduit and confirm the liner stays in position.
