Sourcing timber I-joists from China

Timber I-joists from China carry 0% UK duty across the bamboo and other I-beam lines, with no listed trade remedy. For Great Britain, ask the relevant timber authority to confirm the timber legality due diligence obligations for the importer first placing these products on the market. Check performance evidence for the exact joist construction. Cambridge China Bridge sources timber I-joists.

Zero duty on timber I-joists

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 4418 covers builders' joinery and carpentry of wood. Its engineered structural timber branch separates I-beams from glulam and other products. Timber I-joists other than bamboo fall under 4418 83 00 90; bamboo I-beams have their own line. The table includes other structural products for comparison, not as alternative codes for the same joist.

Both I-beam lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. The supplied tariff data attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry, but lists no import control on these lines. Ask your customs broker to confirm the relevance of that export entry if you later export the goods.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished cross-section, constituent materials and intended structural use. The wider heading is covered in the glulam timber beams guide.

Specify the flange, web and structural evidence

Specify joist depth and length, flange material and dimensions, web material and thickness, adhesive, moisture target and dimensional tolerances. Give the supplier the intended spans, loads, bearing arrangement and floor or roof build-up. Ask your structural designer to review product-specific performance evidence and installation instructions before approving the order.

For construction products covered by a designated standard, confirm with the relevant construction products authority whether the manufacturer must draw up a declaration of performance when placing them on the market. Products not covered or not fully covered by a designated standard may be covered by a technical assessment document. Ask the supplier to identify the route for the exact I-joist, rather than presenting a report for its web panel alone.

Ask the relevant timber authority to confirm whether the goods under heading 4418 are covered by timber legality due diligence in Great Britain, and the obligations of the business first placing them on that market, including those concerning illegally harvested timber. Request species, harvest countries and supporting supply-chain documents for the flanges and web before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 timber I-joists for a building-materials distributor under 4418 83 00 90, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £63,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £63,500, so it is £12,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure overall depth, length, flange dimensions, web thickness and straightness against the approved drawing across sampled bundles.

Bonding: inspect flange-to-web joints, web joints and flange joints for gaps, separation and damage. Arrange product-specific bond and strength testing against the agreed performance evidence.

Moisture and packing: compare readings at packing and arrival with the agreed target; inspect for wet wrapping, mould, swollen webs and crushed flange edges.

Identity and instructions: match bundle identification to the ordered product and supporting reports. Check that bearing, blocking, fixing and permitted web-hole instructions accompany the shipment.

What goes wrong

A substituted flange grade, thinner web or changed adhesive can leave the delivered joist different from the product described in the performance evidence. A panel test alone does not establish the performance of the assembled joist. Agree that material or construction changes need your approval, and use inspection to compare production with the approved specification.

Wet packs can conceal swollen webs and separated joints, while handling can crush flange edges. Quarantine damaged pieces for assessment before installation. Another failure is a timber file that names China as the manufacturing country but cannot establish the harvest origin of the wood components.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on timber I-joists from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% on both bamboo and other I-beams, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension.

Do timber I-joists need timber due diligence?

Confirm with the relevant timber authority whether heading 4418 and your product are covered, and what timber legality due diligence obligations apply to the business first placing the goods on the Great Britain market.

Is a web-panel test report enough for an I-joist?

Ask for performance evidence covering the assembled joist, including its flange material, web, adhesive and joints. Have your structural designer review it for the intended application.

Can I cut holes in imported timber I-joists?

Follow the instructions for the exact joist product. Obtain the permitted web-hole locations and sizes before ordering, and ask the structural designer to review the proposed service layout.
