Sourcing timber balustrades from China
Timber balustrades from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant joinery and structural timber lines, with no listed trade remedies. Importers must complete timber legality due diligence before first placing them on the Great Britain market. Agree the guarding design and fixings before production. Cambridge China Bridge sources timber balustrades.

Zero duty on the relevant timber lines
Heading 4418 covers builders' joinery and carpentry of wood. For timber balustrades, distinguish finished assemblies from separately supplied posts and engineered structural components. The table gives candidate lines, not interchangeable classifications. Glued decorative rails are not automatically structural glue-laminated timber. See the wooden staircase guide for the wider heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. Each attaches a DCMS Export Licence measure. Official cultural-goods guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirements; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached export measure applies to your transaction.
Confirm the commodity code using the timber construction, machining, intended use and whether the shipment contains a complete balustrade or separate components. Heading 4418 is covered by timber legality due diligence in Great Britain. Obtain species, harvest country and supporting legality documents for every wood component before ordering, including concealed cores and veneers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other wooden joinery, including qualifying finished balustrades | 4418 99 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Timber posts and beams, excluding engineered structural timber | 4418 30 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Non-bamboo structural glue-laminated timber components | 4418 81 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other non-bamboo engineered structural timber components | 4418 89 00 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the balustrade and its fixing system
Give the factory drawings showing stair pitch, landing layout, rail profiles, newel positions, spindle spacing and fixing details. Specify timber species, solid or laminated construction, moisture range, finish and indoor or outdoor use. Identify the supporting stair or floor material. Have the project designer approve the assembly and anchorage before production.
Approved Document K is England's guidance on protection from falling. Its guarding guidance calls for resistance to the specified minimum loads. Ask for design calculations or test evidence matching the rail, posts, joints and fixings being supplied. Agree the project-specific height and opening dimensions with the designer rather than copying a catalogue drawing.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 timber balustrade kits for a small building contractor, illustrative only under 4418 99 00 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Geometry: measure rail profiles, post sections, spindle lengths, drilled holes and joint positions against the approved drawings; trial-assemble a stair section and a landing corner.
Timber: check species and construction against the order, measure moisture at packing and arrival, and inspect knots, splits, bowing and glue lines.
Joints and finish: check joint fit, supplied fixings, sharp edges, splinters, coating coverage and colour against the approved sample. Inspect end grain and concealed faces.
Packing and records: check component labels, assembly instructions, fixing schedules and timber origin documents. Record damaged or missing parts during arrival inspection.

What goes wrong
A sample rail fits, but production hole positions drift and the landing corner cannot be assembled. Wet timber shrinks after installation, loosening spindle joints; long rails bow, newels split around fixings, and laminated parts separate. Check a complete assembly from production and keep its measurements with the approved drawings.
A factory demonstrates a rail on its own while the supplied post connection or floor anchorage remains unproven. Match performance evidence to the complete proposed assembly. Missing harvest records also leave the importer unable to complete timber legality due diligence, even when the surface finish looks acceptable.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on timber balustrades from China?
The selected joinery, post and engineered structural timber lines carried 0% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the line for the actual assembly or components.
Do timber balustrades need timber due diligence?
Yes. Heading 4418 is covered in Great Britain. The business first placing the goods on that market must exercise due diligence on timber legality. Obtain species, harvest country and supporting documents for every wood component.
Which building guidance should my designer check?
For England, check Approved Document K's guarding guidance. It calls for resistance to specified minimum loads. Have the designer confirm the project's geometry, assembly and anchorage before ordering.
What should I check when timber balustrades arrive?
Check moisture, bowing, splits, glue lines, machining and component counts. Trial-assemble the joints and a landing corner against the drawings. Photograph damage and keep the inspection record before installation.
