Sourcing glulam timber beams from China

Glulam timber beams from China carry 0% UK duty across the bamboo and other glulam lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. For wood beams first placed on the Great Britain market, confirm timber legality due-diligence responsibilities with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources glulam timber beams.

Glulam classification and zero duty

Heading 4418 covers builders' joinery and carpentry of wood, including engineered structural timber. Glulam has separate lines for bamboo and other materials. The table shows straight and curved buying options under the same material codes; shape does not create an additional tariff line. For timber guarding, see our guide to sourcing timber balustrades from China.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, both glulam lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The supplied entries attach a cultural-goods export licence control, rather than an import control. Ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if the beams will later be exported.

Confirm the material and laminated construction through finding your commodity code. Other products within this heading are discussed in the prefabricated timber roof trusses guide. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT. For joist purchases, see sourcing timber I-joists.

Specify the beam and its structural evidence

Give the factory the engineer's beam schedule and drawings. Specify timber species, strength properties, section, length, curvature, camber, adhesive system, exposure conditions, moisture acceptance range and appearance grade. Show every hole, notch, bearing face and connection detail. Agree which faces will remain visible and prohibit material or adhesive substitutions without approval.

For construction products covered by a designated standard, confirm with the relevant authority whether the manufacturer must draw up a declaration of performance when placing them on the market. Request the declaration and supporting assessment documents for the exact beam construction and factory. CE marking continues to be available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Have the engineer check that declared performance meets the project design.

For wood products within heading 4418 first placed on the Great Britain market, confirm timber legality due-diligence responsibilities with the relevant authority. Obtain species, harvest origin and supporting supply-chain documents before ordering. A Chinese manufacturing address does not establish the country of harvest.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A project batch of wood glulam beams, illustrative only under 4418 81 00 90, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure section, length, curvature and camber against the approved drawings; check bearing faces, holes and connection positions.

Bonding: inspect exposed glue lines, finger joints and ends for openings or separation; match bond-test evidence to the adhesive, construction and production batch.

Moisture and condition: compare recorded moisture readings with the agreed range at packing and arrival; photograph splits, mould, wet wrapping and handling damage.

Traceability: match beam identification to the schedule, batch records, performance documents and timber-origin file. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong

A beam can match the external dimensions while its species, lamination arrangement or adhesive differs from the approved construction. Wrong camber or misplaced connection holes can prevent installation. Open glue lines, transport splits and wet packs need investigation before the beams are released for structural use.

A generic factory certificate may describe a different product or manufacturing site. Hold affected beams separately while the engineer reviews discrepancies and the supplier provides matching evidence. Agree protected packing, lifting positions and an arrival inspection procedure before dispatch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on glulam beams from China?

Both the bamboo and other glulam lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Do imported wood glulam beams need timber due diligence?

Confirm timber legality due-diligence responsibilities with the relevant authority before first placing the beams on the Great Britain market. Collect species, harvest origin and supporting legality documents for the timber, rather than relying on the factory's Chinese address.

Is a factory certificate enough for structural glulam?

Ask for performance and assessment documents matching the exact beam construction and factory. Have the project engineer compare declared properties with the design before approving supply.

What should I check when glulam beams arrive?

Check beam identification, dimensions, camber, connection positions, moisture, glue-line openings and transport damage against the approved schedule and inspection records.
