Sourcing through-coloured MDF from China

Through-coloured MDF from China carries 6% UK duty across the relevant heading 4411 lines. Confirm timber due diligence obligations and, for construction panels, applicable performance documentation and marking requirements with the relevant authorities. Check colour through the core against a cut sample. Cambridge China Bridge sources through-coloured MDF.

Duty depends on the board specification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant MDF lines under heading 4411 all carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.

Heading 4411 covers fibreboard of wood or other ligneous materials, whether or not bonded with resins or other organic substances. For through-coloured MDF, establish thickness, density, mechanical working and surface covering before choosing a line. Confirm the commodity code from the actual board specification, rather than the supplier's colour name.

The absence of attached tariff controls does not establish whether timber due diligence obligations apply. Confirm with the relevant authority how the UK Timber Regulations apply to the fibreboard and your role in placing it on the Great Britain market, including any requirements concerning species, country of harvest and illegal timber risk assessment. See the wider MDF and fibreboard guide for the broader product family.

Specify core colour and the finished edge

Describe the product as coloured throughout its thickness, and approve a cut cross-section rather than a face photograph. Agree the colour reference, acceptable shade variation, visible fibre appearance and whether adjoining panels must come from the same production batch. Specify sheet dimensions, thickness tolerance, density, intended use and whether surfaces arrive unfinished or coated.

Approve a sample machined with the intended cutter and finished with the intended oil, lacquer or sealer. Check the resulting face and edge together. Specify moisture resistance and fire performance separately from colour, and request batch-linked reports for internal bond, swelling and formaldehyde emissions.

For wood-based panels used in construction, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking are required, and what information on formaldehyde class and reaction to fire is applicable. CE marking remains available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Agree the intended construction use and supporting documents before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a container of unworked, uncovered 18 mm through-coloured MDF sheets under 4411 14 10 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,600. Duty at 6% is £996. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,596, so it is £3,519.20. Import taxes total £4,515.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £996 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Colour: compare faces, freshly cut edges and routed recesses with the approved sample under consistent lighting; check for pale cores, streaks and shade changes between packs.

Machining: cut, route and drill shipped-batch samples; inspect edge crumbling, loose fibres and the appearance after the agreed finish.

Board condition: measure thickness across sheets, check flatness and moisture, and inspect corners, edges and wrapping for damage or water ingress.

Documents: match batch identifiers to labels and test reports; check timber source records and, for construction panels, the declaration of performance and conformity marking.

What goes wrong

A face sample can conceal a pale or uneven core, and boards that look alike separately can show a mismatch when installed together. Compare adjoining sheets and routed details before accepting the batch. Keep an approved finished sample for repeat orders, because changing the coating or sanding process can change the visible colour.

Coloured board can still have a weak core, swell or warp. Do not accept colour as proof of moisture resistance or fire performance. Require evidence for the agreed grade, inspect the shipped batch and store arriving sheets flat and covered. The inspection guide explains how to turn these checks into an inspection brief.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on through-coloured MDF from China?

The relevant heading 4411 MDF lines carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff record. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions are listed.

How do I check that MDF is coloured all the way through?

Approve a freshly cut cross-section and a routed sample. Compare the core, face and machined edge, then repeat those checks on samples from the shipped batch.

Is through-coloured MDF moisture resistant?

Colour alone does not establish moisture resistance. Specify the required grade and ask for batch-linked swelling and internal bond test reports.

Does through-coloured MDF need CE or UKCA marking?

For panels used in construction, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking are required. Agree the intended use and check documents for the actual board supplied.
