Sourcing MDF beadboard panels from China
MDF beadboard panels from China carry a flat 6% UK duty under heading 4411, with no listed anti-dumping duty. Confirm the importer's timber due-diligence obligations with the relevant authority, and whether panels for building use require a declaration of performance and CE or UKCA marking. Specify the grooved profile and moisture grade. Cambridge China Bridge sources MDF beadboard panels.

Beadboard duty depends on the board specification
Heading 4411 covers fibreboard of wood or other ligneous materials, including MDF. Beadboard panels have a machined decorative groove pattern, so check the worked-board lines rather than the raw-board lines. Thickness, density and surface covering determine which line fits. See the MDF slatwall guide for wider heading context.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all the selected lines carried 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%. Timber legality and construction-product requirements still need attention even where the tariff lists no controls.
Ask the factory for measured board density, finished thickness, a groove drawing and details of any primer or facing. Use these to confirm the commodity code with your customs broker before shipment; a supplier's description of decorative wall panels is not a complete classification specification.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worked MDF up to 5 mm thick, density not exceeding 0.8 g/cm³ | 4411 12 94 00 | 6% | None |
| Worked MDF over 5 mm up to 9 mm thick, density not exceeding 0.8 g/cm³ | 4411 13 94 00 | 6% | None |
| Worked MDF over 9 mm thick, density over 0.5 and not exceeding 0.8 g/cm³ | 4411 14 95 00 | 6% | None |
| Worked high-density MDF over 9 mm thick, excluding laminate floor coverings | 4411 14 93 00 | 6% | None |
Specify the bead profile, joints and intended use
Specify sheet dimensions, finished thickness, groove spacing and depth, bead shape, the distance from the edge to the first groove, and the edge joint. Agree whether panels have square edges, overlapping edges or tongue-and-groove joints. Approve adjoining samples so the groove rhythm continues across the seam. Include skirting and corner details in the drawing.
Choose the board grade for the intended room and agree moisture, swelling and internal-bond checks. Define whether the panel is supplied bare, primed or finished. On primed panels, agree coverage inside the grooves, sanding quality, colour and compatibility with the intended topcoat. Request batch reports for formaldehyde emissions rather than relying on the sample alone.
For panels used in construction, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and CE or UKCA marking are required, and how formaldehyde class and reaction to fire should be declared. CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain. Businesses trading in timber products must take steps to ensure legal sourcing; confirm with the relevant authority whether the fibreboard is covered by the UK Timber Regulations and what due diligence the importer first placing it on the GB market should carry out, including checks on species and country of harvest.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a container shipment of primed MDF beadboard panels under 4411 14 95 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,600. Duty at 6% is £996. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,596, so it is £3,519.20. Import taxes total £4,515.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £996 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Profile and joints: measure groove spacing, depth and edge offsets against the approved drawing. Fit adjoining panels together and check that seams preserve the bead pattern without steps or gaps.
Board and surface: check thickness, squareness and flatness across sampled sheets. Inspect groove bottoms for torn fibres, raised grain and bare primer patches, and check tongues and corners for chipping.
Performance documents: match the shipped board grade and finish to the batch reports, formaldehyde declaration and construction-product documents. Check moisture and swelling results against the agreed specification.
Packing and arrival: inspect flat pallet support, edge protection and wrapping. On arrival, record wet packaging, swollen edges, bowing and crushed joints before unpacking the whole delivery. Store panels flat and covered.

What goes wrong
Panels can look consistent individually but show an uneven groove rhythm once installed. Incorrect edge offsets, varying joint widths and poorly machined tongues cause visible seams. Thin primer inside the grooves leaves rough, absorbent patches that show through the topcoat. Keep an approved joined sample and compare production panels with it.
A green core alone does not demonstrate moisture performance. Ordinary board supplied as a moisture-resistant grade can swell at cut edges, while damp packing can leave panels bowed before installation. A flat face sample also misses weak tongues and chipped bead edges. Include joint fitting and packing checks in the inspection brief.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on MDF beadboard panels from China?
The relevant heading 4411 lines carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Do MDF beadboard panels need CE or UKCA marking?
For panels used in construction, confirm with the relevant authority whether a declaration of performance and CE or UKCA marking are required. Check that any supplied documents identify the supplied panel, and confirm how its formaldehyde class and reaction to fire should be stated.
Can I use MDF beadboard panels in a bathroom?
Specify the room conditions, board grade and coating system before ordering. Check moisture and swelling reports. Green colouring alone does not prove that the board meets the agreed moisture performance.
How do I check that beadboard grooves match at panel joints?
Approve adjoining samples, then check groove spacing, edge offsets and joint fit against the drawing. Inspect joined production panels, because an individual sheet can hide an uneven pattern at the seam.
