Sourcing bonded acoustic rolls from China

Thermobonded acoustic nonwoven rolls from China normally pay a flat 4% UK duty under heading 5603. Listed suspensions are narrowly defined. Check UK REACH evidence for finishes and match acoustic and fire reports to the supplied material and intended installation. Cambridge China Bridge sources thermobonded acoustic nonwoven rolls.

Duty depends on the roll's construction

Heading 5603 covers nonwovens, whether or not impregnated, coated, covered or laminated. For thermobonded acoustic rolls, establish whether the web uses man-made filaments or other fibres, its mass per unit area and whether it is coated or covered. The table gives possible routes for heavier rolls and lighter facing material, rather than a single code for everything sold as acoustic nonwoven.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the listed lines carried 4% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The supplied data lists conditional suspensions, including medical protective garments and specified industrial filter media or insulating paper. These are not a general exemption for acoustic rolls. No import controls are recorded against the selected lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the fibre construction, weight and surface treatment. The supplied snapshot does not include a general uncoated heavy other-fibre line, so ask your broker to check the current tariff for that construction. For the wider heading, see nonwoven fabrics.

Specify the bonded web and acoustic assembly

State the polymer, filament or staple-fibre construction, thermal bonding method, binder-fibre composition, recycled content, mass per unit area and tolerances. Agree thickness under a stated measuring pressure, roll width and length, core dimensions, permitted joins and recovery after unpacking. Identify any facing, adhesive backing or flame-retardant treatment separately.

Ask for acoustic results that identify the material thickness, facing, backing, air gap and mounting arrangement. Agree the absorption performance needed for the intended assembly. Request fire test evidence for the supplied construction, including its finishes. A report for a different thickness or an uncovered sample is a poor basis for accepting faced rolls.

Ask for UK REACH evidence covering binders, finishes and flame retardants; restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances. For building use, establish the applicable product standard and documentation route before ordering. Construction products not covered or not fully covered by a designated standard may be covered by a technical assessment document. Agree the evidence with your testing adviser.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8 tonnes of uncoated thermobonded acoustic nonwoven rolls made from man-made filaments under 5603 14 80 90, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,200. Duty at 4% is £648. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,848, so it is £3,369.60. Import taxes total £4,017.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £648 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Web consistency: cut samples across the width, weigh them and measure thickness under the agreed pressure. Compare the edges and centre with the approved sample; check for thin bands, hard bonded patches and loose fibres.

Recovery and conversion: unpack compressed samples and check recovery after the agreed conditioning period. Trial cutting, handling and fitting; check that layers stay together and that adhesive backing releases and bonds as agreed.

Reports and identity: match roll batch labels to the material specification and acoustic and fire reports. Check that fibre composition, thickness, facing and treatment identify the material actually delivered.

Roll condition: measure width and length, inspect joins and crushed cores, and check wrapping for moisture damage or contamination. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A roll can match the sample's colour yet have lower mass, uneven bonding or poor recovery after compression. Hard patches and thin edges make cutting and fitting inconsistent. Changed binder fibres, recycled feedstock or facings can leave the delivered material different from the tested sample.

An absorption result for a particular mounting arrangement does not establish performance in another assembly. Avoid accepting a headline acoustic rating without the report and specimen details. Keep an approved sample and agree how material changes trigger fresh checks before repeat orders.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on acoustic nonwoven rolls from China?

The selected heading 5603 lines carried 4% duty for China on 30 September 2026. Listed suspensions are conditional and do not give ordinary acoustic rolls a blanket exemption.

Does thermal bonding determine the commodity code?

No. Confirm filament or other-fibre construction, mass per unit area and coating or covering. The acoustic sales description alone is insufficient.

Can I use the supplier's acoustic test report?

Check that it identifies the supplied material, thickness, facing, backing, air gap and mounting. Agree acceptance against the assembly you intend to use.

What should I check after unpacking compressed rolls?

Check thickness recovery after agreed conditioning, mass across the width, bonding consistency, loose fibres and roll dimensions. Compare with the approved sample.
