Sourcing nonwoven drainage geotextiles from China
Ordinary nonwoven drainage geotextile rolls from China pay 4% UK duty across the relevant weight bands, with no anti-dumping duty. Construction use determines the compliance evidence; specify filtration performance as well as fabric weight. Cambridge China Bridge sources nonwoven drainage geotextiles.

4% duty on ordinary drainage rolls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 5603 covers nonwovens, whether or not impregnated, coated, covered or laminated. Drainage geotextile roll classification depends on filament or other fibre construction, mass per square metre, and coating or covering. The table gives candidate lines, rather than a code determined solely by the word geotextile.
The selected lines carry 4% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. They also list narrow suspensions for specified products, including medical protective garments and, on certain lines, industrial filter media or other named fabrics. Ordinary drainage rolls do not receive relief merely because their code lists a suspension. No import controls are attached to the selected lines in the supplied tariff record.
Confirm the material, manufacturing process and finish before choosing the commodity code. For other uses and weight bands, see the nonwoven fabrics guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated filament nonwovens, over 70 to 150 g/m², other | 5603 13 90 90 | 4% | None |
| Uncoated filament nonwovens, over 150 g/m², other | 5603 14 80 90 | 4% | None |
| Other uncoated nonwovens, over 70 to 150 g/m², other | 5603 93 90 90 | 4% | None |
| Coated or covered filament nonwovens, over 150 g/m² | 5603 14 10 00 | 4% | None |
Specify filtration for the drainage application
State whether the fabric will wrap a drain, separate soil from aggregate or form part of a drainage composite. Specify polypropylene or polyester, filament or staple fibre, bonding process, mass per square metre and tolerance, roll width and length, tensile strength in both directions, elongation and puncture resistance.
Agree opening size, water flow through the fabric and the test methods with the project designer. Match the specification to the soil and drainage arrangement; fabric weight alone does not establish filtration suitability. Specify any exposure before burial, stabilisation treatment, permitted joins and roll identification.
Geotextiles may be construction products. Ask for the applicable construction-use evidence, declared performance and supporting reports for the exact grade and intended use. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied in Great Britain. Ask for a UK REACH statement covering binders and finishes.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8 tonnes of uncoated polypropylene filament drainage geotextile rolls under 5603 14 80 90, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,200. Duty at 4% is £648. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,848, so it is £3,369.60. Import taxes total £4,017.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £648 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Weight and dimensions: cut and weigh samples across the full width, measure roll width and length, and compare thickness and tolerances with the agreed specification.
Filtration and strength: match opening-size, water-flow, tensile and puncture test results to the delivered grade and batch. Check both fabric directions rather than accepting a single strength figure.
Fabric and packing: inspect for holes, thin strips, contamination, uneven bonding and undeclared joins. Check wrapping, wet patches, crushed cores and damage to roll edges.
Traceability: match roll labels, batch records and performance reports. Record arrival defects with photographs and retained samples; use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong
A supplier substitutes a lighter fabric or changes the fibre blend while retaining the same product name. Rolls can meet the nominal weight yet differ in opening size, water flow or puncture resistance. A general fabric report may describe a different grade from the drainage material delivered.
Ordering by weight alone leaves filtration suitability unresolved. Agree measurable acceptance criteria before production, retain the approved sample and compare arrival samples with batch reports. Investigate missing length, uneven edges and damaged wrapping before releasing rolls to the site.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on nonwoven drainage geotextiles from China?
Ordinary drainage rolls on the selected heading 5603 lines carry 4% duty from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure is recorded; narrow suspensions apply only to specified products.
Can I choose drainage geotextile by fabric weight alone?
No. Agree opening size, water flow, tensile strength and puncture resistance for the soil and drainage arrangement. Compare reports for the exact grade, rather than relying on weight alone.
Do drainage geotextiles need construction-use evidence?
Geotextiles may be construction products. Confirm the intended use and ask for the applicable evidence and performance reports for the supplied grade. Legitimately CE-marked construction products remain accepted in Great Britain.
What should I check when the rolls arrive?
Check mass across the width, roll dimensions, holes, thin areas, joins and packing damage. Match each batch to its filtration and strength reports, and retain samples of disputed material.
