UK duty on schreinering calenders

Heading 8420 covers calendering or other rolling machines, other than for metals or glass, and their cylinders. Textile schreinering calenders belong to the textile-machine family under 8420 10 10 00. Separately imported cylinders and other parts have their own lines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected textile-machine, cylinder and other-parts lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's textile finishing function and whether the shipment contains a complete machine, cylinders or other parts. For the wider product family, see textile calender machines.

Specify the engraved roll and fabric finish

Specify the working width, fabric types, engraved-roll material, groove pattern, engraving angle and surface condition. Agree the mating-roll covering, roll diameter, nip pressure range, heating method, operating temperature, speed range and fabric-tension controls. Ask the factory to identify the fitted roll against its engraving drawing.

Approve a trial using your own fabric and retain a reference sample for lustre, handle and visible marking. Agree how the factory will demonstrate consistent results across the working width. Include spare-roll compatibility, roll-changing access, electrical supply and heating connections in the order specification.

Before supplying machinery in Great Britain, confirm the applicable essential health and safety, conformity marking, declaration of conformity and English-instruction requirements with the relevant authority. CE and UKCA conformity routes are recognised in Great Britain. Check the declaration and supporting safety documentation for the actual machine configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one textile schreinering calender under 8420 10 10 00, invoiced at £85,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £91,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £91,000, so it is £18,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Engraved roll: check the engraving against the approved drawing, inspect for scratches and damaged grooves, and verify roll runout and surface condition.

Fabric trial: compare lustre and handle with the retained sample, inspect across the fabric width for bands and creases, and record pressure, temperature, speed and tension settings.

Safety and documents: check nip guards, trip bars and roll-opening controls, test every emergency stop, and match the declaration, machine identification and English manual.

Arrival: inspect the engraved surface and journals for corrosion or handling damage, check supplied spares and connections, then repeat the fabric trial after installation.

What goes wrong

A factory trial on a different fabric can conceal an unsuitable finish. Incorrect engraving, roll runout, uneven heating or unstable fabric tension can produce streaks, creases and uneven lustre. Worn mating-roll covers can also change the result even when the engraved roll looks sound.

Unprotected engraved surfaces can arrive scratched or corroded. Agree surface protection and lifting arrangements before dispatch, and retain trial records to compare with the installed machine. Use a product-specific inspection brief and check the builder's finishing-machine experience through factory verification.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
