Sourcing friction calenders from China

Friction calenders and their listed parts from China carry 0% UK duty, so the duty range is 0% throughout. Confirm the applicable machinery safety requirements, conformity marking, declaration and English instructions with HSE before supply in Great Britain. Check differential roll speeds and nip guarding. Cambridge China Bridge sources friction calenders.

0% UK duty on friction calenders and parts

Heading 8420 covers calendering or other rolling machines, other than for metals or glass, and their cylinders. For rubber friction calenders, the other-machinery line is a starting point for classification. The table also covers replacement cylinders and other parts. See our wider rubber calender guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. This tariff position does not replace machinery safety checks.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's function, processed material and whether the shipment contains complete machinery, cylinders or other parts. Describe the rubber-frictioning process to your customs broker rather than relying on the supplier's description alone.

Specify the frictioning process and roll drives

Specify the fabric and rubber compound, working width, roll arrangement, roll diameter, surface finish, nip adjustment and heating method. State the required differential roll-speed ratio, adjustment range and fabric tension control. Agree acceptance criteria for rubber penetration, coating uniformity and fabric distortion using your own materials.

Confirm with HSE the applicable essential health and safety requirements under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, including conformity marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions, before supply in Great Britain. CE marking remains recognised in Great Britain; confirm whether UKCA is an appropriate route for the machine. The relevant conformity assessment procedure must be carried out. Ask for documents matching the actual machine and its supplied feed and take-off equipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One friction calender for a small rubber-fabric converter; illustrative values under 8420 10 89 00, invoiced at £85,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £91,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £91,000, so it is £18,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Rolls and drives: check roll runout, surface condition, drive direction and differential speed under load. Record nip settings and temperature uniformity across the working width.

Fabric trial: use the agreed rubber compound and fabric. Check penetration, coating consistency, wrinkles, edge tracking and distortion against retained samples.

Safeguarding: check rubber-feed and fabric-feed nip guards, trip bars, emergency stops and roll-opening controls. Include the take-off and winding equipment in the inspection.

Arrival and documents: check transit damage, corrosion, roll protection and loose connections before commissioning. Match the machine identification to its declaration, English manual, drawings and spares list. Arrange quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A demonstration with an easy compound can hide poor penetration on your fabric. Incorrect differential speed, uneven roll heating or unstable fabric tension can cause patchy rubber coverage, wrinkles and distortion. Agree the trial materials and record the settings that produced the accepted sample.

A supplier may demonstrate the calender without the ordered winding equipment or with guards removed for access. Inspect the complete supplied arrangement and its nip protection. Check the builder's experience with frictioning through factory verification.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on friction calenders from China?

The selected machinery, cylinder and other-parts lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code applies to a rubber friction calender?

8420 10 89 00 is the other-calendering-machinery line to check. Confirm it against the machine's function and processed material; replacement cylinders and other parts have separate lines.

Can a friction calender use CE marking in Great Britain?

Yes. CE marking remains recognised for machinery in Great Britain. Confirm the applicable safety requirements, declaration and English instructions with HSE; a mark alone is insufficient.

What should I test before shipment?

Run your rubber compound and fabric under load. Check differential roll speed, penetration, coating uniformity, tension and tracking, then inspect nip guards and test emergency stops on the supplied arrangement.
