UK duty on telescope tripods
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 9620 covers monopods, bipods, tripods and similar articles. Telescope supports are relevant to 9620 00 10 00, which includes supports for other apparatus of Chapter 90. The table also shows the residual material lines for comparison; an aluminium telescope tripod should not be assigned to the residual aluminium line solely because of its material.
All listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches a cultural-goods export licence control to 9620 00 10 00. Official guidance states that cultural-goods imports into Great Britain have no licensing requirements. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your China shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using the tripod's intended apparatus and whether it is supplied separately or with equipment. For the wider heading, see surveying tripods. This guide concerns standalone mechanical telescope tripods.

Specify the mount interface and observing stability
Specify the mounting platform diameter, centre bolt thread and usable length, locating pin position and clearance for the intended mount. Supply a drawing and a physical mount for sample fitting. Agree whether the spreader, accessory tray, feet, carry bag and tools are included.
State the working load for the mount, telescope and accessories together, leg material, tube dimensions, height range, folded length and lock type. Agree a stability test with the intended assembly, including vibration after focusing and clearance as the telescope moves.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 aluminium telescope tripods, illustrative order under 9620 00 10 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £590 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,090. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,090, so it is £618. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Mount fit: assemble the intended mount, check bolt engagement and locating pin fit, and check for rocking or interference.
Leg locks: apply the agreed working load at full extension, leave it overnight and check for slipping, rotation or loose hinges.
Stability: fit the spreader and tray, check foot contact, then focus and move the telescope while checking vibration and joint play.
Arrival condition: check castings, tubes and threads for cracks, dents and burrs; confirm the agreed accessories and assembly instructions are present.

What goes wrong
A matching bolt thread does not guarantee a matching mount. The bolt can bottom out before clamping, the locating pin can obstruct seating, or the platform can leave the mount rocking. Approve the assembled sample rather than the thread description alone.
A tripod can hold the stated weight yet vibrate during focusing. Loose hinges, thin tubes, slipping locks and a poorly fitted spreader can undermine observing stability. Record sample performance with the intended telescope and use it as the acceptance reference. See quality inspection.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on telescope tripods from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty across the listed heading 9620 lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Will a telescope tripod fit any mount?
Check the platform, bolt thread and length, locating pin and surrounding clearance. Approve a sample assembled with the intended mount.
Is the load rating enough to choose a telescope tripod?
Also test vibration, joint play and leg-lock slip with the mount, telescope and accessories fitted. Holding the weight alone does not establish observing stability.
What safety rule applies to consumer telescope tripods in Great Britain?
Consumer products must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Assess stability, collapse, sharp edges and trapping points on the finished tripod.
