Duty and classification for shooting bipods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 9620 covers monopods, bipods, tripods and similar articles. The supplied lines show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. Import VAT is separate from duty.

For shooting bipods within this heading, distinguish plastics, aluminium and other materials. The aluminium rows describe different mounts under the same code. Send the material breakdown, photographs and intended use to your broker to confirm the commodity code. See the tripods and monopods guide for the wider heading.

The supplied camera and optical-apparatus line, 9620 00 10 00, carries a cultural-object export-licence entry. Official guidance describes this as an export scheme for objects of cultural interest. If your broker considers that line relevant, confirm how the attached entry applies; do not treat it as a shooting-bipod import-licence requirement.

Specify the mount and leg mechanism

This guide concerns standalone mechanical shooting supports. Specify whether the mount grips a sling stud or a rail, and supply an interface drawing and a representative fitting fixture. Agree clamp engagement, fastening torque, adaptor contents and clearance when folded. A matching product photograph does not establish fit.

Specify leg material, deployed and folded height, adjustment travel, working load, lock mechanism, folding direction, swivel movement and foot material. Agree checks for clamp movement, leg creep and repeated deployment. For consumer models sold in Great Britain, the importer must ensure safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use; include pinch points and unintended folding in the assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 3,000 aluminium shooting bipods, illustrative only under 9620 00 91 90, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,500, so it is £4,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mount fit: fit sampled units to the agreed fixture, check clamp engagement and clearance, and check for movement under the agreed load.

Legs and locks: measure adjustment travel and height, cycle deployment, and check that extended legs do not creep or release under load.

Feet and finish: check foot retention, grip on the intended surface, sharp edges, exposed springs, coating coverage and corrosion against the agreed specification.

Labels and packing: compare model identification, batch details, contact information and fitting instructions with approved artwork; check that adaptors and fasteners are present. Use the inspection guide to define the sampling brief.

What goes wrong

Typical failure points are shallow clamp engagement, loose swivel joints, slipping telescopic legs and feet that detach. A mount can appear secure while bearing on the wrong surface. Compare production units with the approved fixture and sample, rather than accepting the factory’s compatibility description.

A static load check can miss release during folding or adjustment. Check the complete movement sequence and agree rejection criteria before production. Keep units with slipping locks, insecure mounts or sharp edges out of the accepted stock while the fault is investigated.
