Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 9620 covers monopods, bipods, tripods and similar articles. Its camera-support line is 9620 00 10 00. The table shows buying configurations against that same candidate line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Confirm a separately imported gimbal head's commodity code before ordering.

All supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions. The other lines describe non-camera supports by material; do not select them simply because a camera head is aluminium or plastic. Compare mounting choices in our camera tripod ball-head guide.

The supplied camera line also lists a DCMS Export Licence control. Government guidance describes cultural-goods licensing for exports from Great Britain and states that cultural objects have no licensing requirement for import into Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control affects your declaration. Budget separately for import VAT using our duty and VAT guide.

Specify balance, lens clearance and clamp fit

This guide concerns manual tripod gimbal heads for supporting cameras and long lenses. Specify cradle or side-mount construction, working load with the intended camera and lens, vertical adjustment, sliding-plate travel and clearance throughout tilt movement. Agree the tripod mounting thread, clamp profile, plate length, retaining stops, bearing adjustment, lock operation and supplied adaptors.

Approve a sample using your actual lens foot or lens plate. Check whether the camera and lens can balance without tightening the tilt lock, and whether the clamp holds different approved plates consistently. State the required finish, head weight, folded packing arrangement and replacement plate specification.

For heads intended for consumers or likely to be used by them, the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use in Great Britain. Provide instructions explaining balancing, clamping and movement hazards. Where reasonable, identify the importer and product or batch on the product or packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 50 manual camera tripod gimbal heads, subject to classification confirmation; FOB and freight values are illustrative. under 9620 00 10 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £590 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,090. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,090, so it is £618. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Balance and clearance: fit the agreed camera and lens, adjust the cradle and plate, then check balance across the intended tilt positions and clearance around the lens, arm and knobs.

Clamp and threads: fit each approved plate, check jaw engagement and retaining stops, inspect thread fit and confirm that tightening does not bottom out before the mounting joint is secure.

Bearings and locks: check loaded pan and tilt movement for sticking, grinding and play; hold the assembly with the locks engaged and inspect for drift, loose fasteners and movement at the base.

Arrival and identification: compare sampled heads with the approved sample, inspect arms and clamps for damage, confirm supplied plates and adaptors, and check instructions and importer and batch identification.

What goes wrong

A head may support the stated weight yet fail to balance a long lens because the cradle adjustment or plate travel is insufficient. Clamp profiles that look alike can grip differently, while loose pivots, uneven bearing preload and locks that disturb balance make tracking difficult.

Agree acceptance checks around the actual camera, lens and plates. Reject a sample that releases its plate unexpectedly, shifts under the agreed working load or cannot lock securely. Use the same checks before shipment and on arrival; our quality inspection guide explains how to record findings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on camera tripod gimbal heads from China?

The supplied camera-support line, 9620 00 10 00, carries 0% duty from China, with no listed trade remedies. Confirm that it covers your separately imported head.

Will a gimbal head fit my existing lens plate?

Check the clamp profile, jaw engagement, plate length and retaining stops with your actual plate. A supplier's compatibility description does not replace a fit test.

How do I check a gimbal head's load claim?

Use the intended camera and lens. Check balance, loaded movement, mounting security and lock hold against the agreed specification, rather than relying on the weight printed on the box.

What safety information should come with a manual gimbal head?

Explain balancing, secure clamping and movement hazards. For consumer products in Great Britain, provide relevant risk information and, where reasonable, importer and product or batch identification.
