0% duty, subject to classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 9620 covers monopods, bipods, tripods and similar articles. Its camera-use line, 9620 00 10 00, carries 0% duty from China. The table shows ball-head configurations against that candidate line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Confirm separately imported heads using drawings, intended use and the supplied components through our commodity code guide.

The supplied extract records 0% across the heading, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions. It attaches a cultural-object export licence entry to the camera-use line. Official guidance says cultural objects have no licensing requirement for import into Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the tariff entry applies to your shipment, especially for used or collectable equipment.

Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT. Specify whether the shipment contains complete heads, separate plates or replacement components. For another camera-support family within the wider heading, see video tripod fluid heads.

Specify the ball, clamp and working load

Specify the body material, ball diameter, head weight, base mounting thread, camera screw, plate profile and clamp mechanism. Camera supports use the 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch threads standardised in ISO 1222. Name the actual plates and cameras the head must fit, and approve a sample with those components before ordering.

Agree a working-load test with the camera tilted and the lens extending beyond the clamp. Define acceptable movement after locking, adjustment smoothness, friction control, independent pan locking and access to each knob. Test the portrait-position slot with the intended camera body, including clearance around the plate and controls.

Consumer models supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Address camera release, clamp failure, sharp edges and trapped fingers in the product assessment. Agree assembly instructions, load information and batch identification with the supplier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 camera tripod ball heads, subject to classification confirmation under 9620 00 10 00, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,500, so it is £4,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Threads and plates: gauge mounting threads, fit the agreed plates and camera, and check screw engagement without bottoming out or leaving the camera loose.

Loaded locking: hold the agreed camera-and-lens load at an angled position overnight; check ball creep, clamp slip and movement caused by tightening the lock.

Movement and controls: check smooth ball movement, usable friction adjustment, independent pan locking and repeated clamp operation without binding or loosening.

Finish and packing: inspect the ball surface, casting, edges and coating; compare supplied plates, adaptors, tools, instructions and batch labels with the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A head can hold a centred weight yet drift when a camera and lens put leverage on the ball. Tightening the lock can also move the framing. Plate profiles that look alike may rock in the clamp, while short screws, soft threads or loose adaptors leave the camera insecure.

Compare production samples with the approved head using the same camera, lens and plates. Repeat the loaded test after operating the locks, and examine slipping or damaged units before accepting the batch. Use an agreed inspection brief that records the test position and acceptance criteria.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on camera tripod ball heads from China?

The supplied tariff extract gives 0% for 9620 00 10 00 and every other line in heading 9620. Confirm that separately imported ball heads fall within the proposed code before declaring them.

What mounting threads should I specify?

Specify the camera screw and tripod-base thread separately. Camera supports use the 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch threads standardised in ISO 1222; check engagement with the intended equipment.

How do I check a ball head's load rating?

Agree a working-load test using the intended camera and lens at an angled position. Check creep, clamp slip and framing movement when locking, rather than relying on a centred weight alone.

Will the quick-release plate fit my existing clamp?

Approve the exact plate profile and test it in the intended clamp. Check seating, locking, rocking and camera-screw engagement; a similar appearance does not establish compatibility.
