Duty on stump grinders and dedicated parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, forestry machinery under 8436 80 10 00 and other machinery parts under 8436 99 00 90 carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%.

The forestry machinery line has waste import and export controls attached. If a shipment from China is waste subject to notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Shipment to England can begin only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control applies to your shipment.

The table separates stump-grinder configurations sharing the forestry machinery code; these are not separate tariff subdivisions. Confirm the commodity code using the machine's function and specification, and classify separately shipped parts individually. See forestry mulchers for the wider product family.

Specify the cutter and drive system

State whether you need a pedestrian machine, a tracked machine or a carrier-mounted attachment. Agree cutting depth, sweep, access width, machine mass, cutter-wheel construction, tooth pattern and replacement-tooth availability. For hydraulic attachments, match flow, pressure, return arrangement, couplings and mounting geometry to the intended carrier.

Machinery supplied in Great Britain must satisfy essential health and safety requirements and carry the relevant conformity marking. Request the declaration of conformity, English instructions and evidence for the exact model. For engine-powered models, ask a compliance specialist to check the engine emissions documentation before ordering. Use testing and certification support to review the evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of pedestrian stump grinders for a machinery dealer under 8436 80 10 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,000, so it is £6,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cutter assembly: check tooth grade against the agreed specification, tooth seating, fasteners, wheel run-out and access for replacement.

Guarding and stopping: check belt and cutter guards, debris curtains, operator controls and emergency stopping against the approved design during a controlled demonstration.

Drive and chassis: check hydraulic leaks, hose routing, bearing noise, track tension or wheel condition, welds and transport restraints.

Documents and spares: match the model and serial identification to the paperwork; check English instructions, parts drawings and the supplied replacement teeth. Arrange quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

Likely failure points include loose tooth holders, rapid tooth wear, cutter vibration, slipping belts, damaged debris curtains and hydraulic overheating. A mounted grinder can fit the carrier physically yet perform poorly because the hydraulic supply or return arrangement is mismatched.

Agree an acceptance demonstration using representative stumps and the intended carrier where applicable. Record cutting behaviour, leaks, stopping performance and visible defects. Avoid accepting a demonstration video of a different cutter or carrier as evidence for the ordered configuration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stump grinders from China?

The supplied tariff records show 0% for forestry machinery under 8436 80 10 00 and dedicated other machinery parts under 8436 99 00 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Do stump grinders need CE or UKCA marking?

Machinery needs the relevant conformity marking. Great Britain recognises CE or UKCA routes; check the declaration and supporting evidence for the exact model.

Will a hydraulic stump grinder fit my carrier?

Compare mounting geometry, hydraulic flow and pressure, couplings, return requirements and hose routing. Ask for a demonstration with the intended carrier configuration.

What spare parts should I specify?

Agree replacement teeth, holders, fasteners, belts and bearings, with drawings and part references. Check whether replacements can be fitted using the supplied instructions and tools.
