Sourcing steel sludge settlement tanks from China
Steel sludge settlement tanks from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant liquid-container lines. Heading 7309 covers tanks exceeding 300 litres without mechanical or thermal equipment; fitted equipment can change classification. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel sludge settlement tanks.

Duty on passive steel sludge settlement tanks
Heading 7309 covers steel containers exceeding 300 litres, whether lined or heat-insulated, without mechanical or thermal equipment. For sludge settlement, distinguish liquid slurry from solid sludge storage and specify the equipment supplied. The solids row concerns an associated solid-material container, rather than an ordinary liquid settlement tank. See the wider steel storage tanks and vats guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or import control. The separate gas-container line carries an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases. If that line is proposed, the importer should confirm the requirement with their customs broker.
Confirm the commodity code against capacity, lining and fitted equipment. Tanks with agitators or heating or cooling jackets fall outside this passive-container classification. Confirm with your customs broker whether these lines fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism for imports planned from 1 January 2027; ask the supplier for emissions data when planning later imports.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid sludge settlement tanks, lined or heat-insulated | 7309 00 30 00 | 0% | None |
| Other liquid sludge settlement tanks exceeding 100,000 litres | 7309 00 51 00 | 0% | None |
| Other liquid sludge settlement tanks not exceeding 100,000 litres | 7309 00 59 00 | 0% | None |
| Associated solid sludge containers, rather than liquid settlement tanks | 7309 00 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the sludge, hopper and overflow layout
Give the fabricator the sludge composition, solids loading, settling behaviour, operating temperature and expected flow. Agree working capacity, freeboard, inlet baffles, overflow weirs, hopper geometry and sludge draw-off connections on an approved drawing. Ask for a design basis covering the filled tank, accumulated sediment, supports and lifting points.
Specify steel grade, plate thickness, corrosion allowance, lining compatibility and repair method. Agree access for cleaning, removable covers, flange details and the scope of site assembly. Suppliers must supply safe work equipment. Confirm with HSE whether the pressure equipment regulations apply to the proposed tank, including whether its atmospheric operation or a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar affects the assessment and whether any exclusions are relevant.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: four unlined 20,000-litre steel sludge settlement tanks without mechanical or thermal equipment under 7309 00 59 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £8,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £68,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £68,000, so it is £13,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: match plate certificates to the tank identification and check thickness against the approved drawing.
Welds and lining: inspect seams, hopper corners and nozzle welds; witness the agreed leak test and check lining coverage, adhesion and damage.
Flow path: verify baffle positions, weir levels, sludge outlet access and flange orientation against the drawing; agree a separate settlement trial using representative feed.
Arrival: inspect lifting points, supports, bracing and transport dents before unloading; check loose components and repeat agreed leak checks after site assembly. See quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong
A tank can pass a leak test yet settle poorly. An inlet aimed towards the overflow can bypass the settling zone, uneven weirs can draw unevenly, and an inaccessible hopper outlet can leave sludge behind. Thin plate, incomplete welds and damaged lining create separate leakage and corrosion risks. Make settlement performance and fabrication acceptance separate parts of the purchase specification.
For an installation in England, confirm the discharge route and whether an environmental permit is required before ordering. Operating without a permit when one is required is illegal. Agree the intended outlet quality with the site operator rather than treating a supplier's settlement claim as permission to discharge.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steel sludge settlement tanks from China?
The relevant heading 7309 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The tanks must exceed 300 litres and have no mechanical or thermal equipment.
Can I use heading 7309 for a tank with an agitator?
The heading excludes tanks fitted with mechanical or thermal equipment. Send the complete drawing and equipment list to your customs broker before choosing the code.
Does a sludge settlement tank need pressure equipment compliance?
Confirm with HSE whether those regulations apply to an atmospheric tank or a vessel with a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar, and whether any exclusions are relevant. Confirm the design pressure before ordering.
Does a leak test prove that a sludge tank will settle properly?
No. A leak test checks containment. Agree a separate performance trial with representative sludge, including overflow quality and sludge removal, alongside weld, lining and dimensional checks.
